Which Is The Best Water Filter Pitcher

Best & Worst Water Filter Pitchers From Consumer Reports’ Tests

Pitcher filters are not the most effective method of purifying tap water. However, they are an excellent starting point. They can remove unappealing smells and funk from your drinking water, as well as common pollutants like as lead and mercury. They’re not prohibitively pricey. According to CR test engineer Richard Handel, who is in charge of water filter testing, “additionally, water filter pitchers are convenient since there is no under-sink installation.” “With the majority of them, you just fill it up with tap water, place it in the refrigerator, and wait.” These pitchers can normally hold up to 10 cups of water and filter the water as it accumulates.

In CR’s lab, we put each pitcher through a battery of tests, timed how long it takes to filter a quart of water at various phases of the filter cartridge’s lifespan, and then compare the results.

But first, evaluate why you require a water filter in the first place.

What steps should you take to eliminate lead and chlorine from your drinking water?

  1. Your response is important because we discovered that some filters are more successful than others on each of these fronts, and your response will be taken into consideration.
  2. In order to tackle this, you’ll need a reverse osmosis water filter with a higher capacity.
  3. And it is in this area that water filter pitchers are most effective.
  4. According to NSF International regulations, all of the pitchers in our testing are certified to remove chlorine, but only half of them are approved to remove lead.

  7. Water filter pitchers that increase flavor and minimize odor were tested by Consumer Reports.
  8. If a manufacturer says that a filter pitcher satisfies criteria for eliminating certain pollutants, like as chlorine and lead, CR investigates and confirms the producer’s assertion.

Pitcher talk

To get things started, here’s a rundown of the six pitchers we put through their paces:

  • Starting with the six pitchers that participated in our testing, here is a rundown of the results:

One important point to take away from this figure is the anticipated life of each pitcher filter in comparison to the cost of each pitcher filter. The Brita Metro Standard and Everyday versions, as well as the Pur Plus and ZeroWater pitchers, all have a shorter projected filter life of up to 40 gallons than the higher-end variants. While the Brita filter and the Pur filter types are both $7 apiece, the ZeroWater filters are $15 each (but are available in a $30 two-pack for a total of $30). Is it possible to locate the ZeroWater filter?

  • Megan Wollerton is a contributor at CNET.
  • Of course, this does not always imply superior performance, but in this particular instance, the ZeroWater outperformed the competition by a wide margin in terms of toxins removed.
  • According to the findings of our tests, it appears that the brand may be onto something.

How we test

Consider the expected life of each pitcher filter in this chart, as well as its cost, before making a decision. There is a difference between the Brita Metro Standard and Everyday versions, as well as the Pur Plus and ZeroWater pitchers, which all have a shorter projected filter life of up to 40 gallons. ZeroWater filters cost $15 each (but may be purchased in a two-pack for a total of $30), compared to the $7 each for the Brita and Pur filters. Identify the ZeroWater filter as soon as possible.

Image courtesy of CNET’s Megan Wollerton According to the image above, the ZeroWater filter on the far right is enormous when compared to the other filters on the market today.

Using a five-stage filter, ZeroWater promises to be more effective at eliminating particulates while also avoiding mold growth.

In addition, keep in mind that filter life will vary depending on the quality of your tap water and how hard your filter needs to “work” in order to eliminate contaminants.

Test results

TDS (% change)
Brita Metro Standard -45.6
Brita Everyday -45.6
Brita Longlast -3.1
Larq self-cleaning -2.2
Pur Plus -6
ZeroWater -100

The ZeroWater pitcher was able to decrease all of the total dissolved solids in my tap water from an average starting TDS measurement of 57 parts per million (ppm) down to zero – which may help to explain the name of the product. A reduction of TDS from 57 to 31 was achieved by both Brita pitchers with the basic filter, tying them for second place (a 45.6 percent decrease). More information may be found at:best showerheads. It was more difficult to assess the flavor of the water, but every pitcher did contribute to reducing the slightly metallic taste of my tap water.

  1. We had a rather simple time with the ZeroWater (ZP-010) in both rounds of testing, which was a pleasant surprise.
  2. However, there are some more excellent solutions available here as well: In comparison to ZeroWater’s pitchers, the Brita Metro Standard is a superb value for money filter pitcher that weighs less and offers lower-cost replacement filters.
  3. More information may be found at:best air purifiers.
  4. Because the majority of home filter pitchers manufactured by a single company will utilize the same filter, you can be confident that the filter will perform the same way regardless of the size or shape of the dispenser you pick, for better or worse.
  5. Only Brita provides a LongLast filter, which did not work as well as the Legacy Brita filters we tested.
  6. The fact that filtered water pitchers may vary so greatly in terms of performance – and even in terms of their primary function, as in the case of the alkaline pitchers – is another important lesson from this study.

Best water filter pitcher FAQs

Our tests revealed that the water filter pitcher that eliminated the greatest number of pollutants was very obvious. We found that the Zero Water pitcher, while being substantially larger and more expensive than the other pitchers, was effective in removing all of the dissolved elements we tested for. The Brita filter pitchers came in second place and were found to remove a significant quantity of impurities from water. More complicated water filters, such as those offered by Aquasana, Hydroviv, and Berkley, can be installed in your sink, however we haven’t had the opportunity to test them.

These water filters may provide better outcomes, but they will cost you between $200 and $500 and may require some type of installation, which might add even more expenditures to your budget.

Do water filter pitchers remove bacteria?

No. The use of water filter pitchers will eliminate many dangerous elements such as lead, copper, chlorine, and organic compounds that have an adverse effect on the taste of water, but they will not kill bacteria. The microorganisms in your tap water should have already been removed; nevertheless, if you are still worried, a conventional water filter will not be of any use. In fact, if left unattended for an extended length of time, a water filter can accumulate filth, which can allow germs to develop and contaminate your drinking water.

How do I clean a water filter pitcher?

Change the filter on your water filtration pitcher regularly. This is the most essential thing you can do to keep it clean. While the filters of most filter pitcher brands, such as Brita and Zero Water, should be replaced after 40 gallons of use, the exact quantity varies from model to model. The vast majority of the water pitchers that we evaluated can and should be cleaned on a regular basis, just like any other piece of plastic kitchen equipment. By hand, you may remove the filter and thoroughly clean the pitcher with hot water and soap, being care to completely rinse the pitcher so that there is no soap residue left behind.

Just remember to take off the filter, which should never be cleaned with soap or any other liquid.

How did we choose these water filter pitchers?

Due to research that has demonstrated the health advantages that water filters may bring, water filters are becoming increasingly popular. If you are unfamiliar with the operation of water filters, selecting the most appropriate model for your family’s requirements might be tricky. Water filters are available in a variety of configurations today, including:

  • Water filter pitchers, which use a replacement filter that is incorporated into the pitcher itself, are frequently the most economical and most available solutions for water filtration on the market. However, because of the restricted capacity, it is best suited for occasional or light tasks. In most cases, a countertop filter is far bigger than the normal water filter pitcher, allowing it to retain a higher volume of water while maintaining an easily accessible form. A faucet filter is a system that attaches directly to your sink’s faucet and is controlled by a switch that may be used to turn on and off the device. Because it is connected to your sink, you will not have to replace the water as frequently as you would with a pitcher. Submerged under-sink filters are put beneath the sink and linked directly to your water supply, allowing you to filter endless amounts of water. The faucet for this type of filter is normally placed separately, however be aware that the filters for this type of filter are often more expensive than water filter pitchers.

Best water filter pitcher overall:Brita Standard Everyday Water Filter Pitcher

Our attention was immediately drawn to the shape and appearance of this contemporary 10-cup Brita pitcher. White and modest, the first thing we noticed about this item was how lightweight it was – something you always want when using an item on a daily basis, as we did. This pitcher came with Brita’s Standard Filter, which is good for 40 gallons of water, or around two months of continuous use. This, of course, is dependent on the number of individuals who are drinking from a single pitcher in your home.

  • Unlike the other two Brita pitchers we tested, this pitcher does not offer a computerized reminder to change the filter.
  • So that you don’t forget, you should circle the date on this sticker when it needs to be replaced.
  • This pitcher is also BPA-free and filters out heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium, as well as other pollutants such as chlorine, to ensure that your water is not only safe but also delicious.
  • The Brita filter produced the best-tasting water by a long shot.
  • A lot like nice European water that you may find at a good dining place, we found it to be rather pleasant.

Brita claims that their filters will reduce chlorine, mercury, copper, zinc, and cadmium (while we did not independently test this, Brita’s filters are accredited by the Water Quality Association, which you can read more about further down in this article.) Another characteristic of a water filter that you may not know is really significant until you use it is the simplicity with which it can be poured.

  • Some filters splattered all over the place.
  • Some of them were downright heaving.
  • With its ergonomic design, secure lid, and smooth and predictable pour, it’s simple to direct into any cup, mug, or water bottle with ease.
  • Using a lukewarm water and soap solution, we cleansed the Brita pitcher completely before running the filter under cold water for 15 seconds.
  • Despite the fact that Brita is still our top choice for a water filtering solution, one of its major drawbacks is how time-consuming the setup may be.
  • (They also advised that we use the spilled water to water plants, which we thought was a great idea!) The ZeroWater pitcher of the same size took 20 minutes, which is less time than the bigger Pur Water pitcher we tried.
  • We picked just those water filters that were certified to the ANSI/NSF industry standard in order to narrow down the many, many water filter alternatives to a pool of eight to test.

We conducted extensive investigation to guarantee that the filters we selected for testing were certified under the NSF standards or the WQA standards, which are the two most often used certifying labs.

With each water filter pitcher in hand, we concentrated our attention on its overall performance.

The design of the water filtration device was evaluated based on the size of the reservoir tank in comparison to the size of the pitcher.

Several times and at various temperatures, including the initial pour, the morning after at room temperature, overnight in a refrigerator, and several days later, we sampled the water from each filtering system.

One of the most important factors we took into account was the physical build of each pitcher.

In order to find out how fast and simply we could replace the filters, we looked on the internet.

We poured so many glasses of water that we lost track of how many we had!

Finally, we examined how easy it was to disassemble the pitcher in order to clean it with warm water and dishwashing soap.

This relatively young water filtration startup has received a lot of positive feedback regarding its flavor and product design.

First and foremost, the positive: it is really simple to set up.

We were pleased with the quickness with which the filter was transferred to the glass, but that was about the extent of our assistance.

It’s like, like, extremely hefty.

The lid on this pitcher was problematic and wouldn’t stay in place, which made pouring a difficult experience.

Finally, and maybe most importantly, we have a problem with the ZeroWater Water Quality Meter, which is well-known for its accuracy.

Because the Water Quality Meter will read zero (thus its name), the water will be the purest possible.

We decided to put the ZeroWaters through their paces because we had two of them to try out.

Following each run through the ZeroWater filter, the water would display a numerical value of “0,” but none of the other filtered fluids came close to matching the “clean” grade assigned by ZeroWater.

It has a fishy odor to us.

For starters, it has a bigger, rounded form that made it difficult to fit into our refrigerator’s inside space.

This Pur pitcher would simply not work in this situation.

Filling the pitcher, on the other hand, took the longest time compared to other pitchers of the same size.

The lid, on the other hand, is one of the less appealing aspects of this design.

We also noticed a chemical-like aftertaste, though I’m not sure what caused it.

In addition to being creative and contemporary, the Soma Pitcher’s marketing material, packaging, and overall design were all excellent.

Setting up this pitcher was not difficult, but it did take a little longer than it would have taken with some of the other options because it required to soak in water for 15 minutes before use.

We started filling the pitcher when the filter had finished its wash.

Afterwards, when it was time to pour, we produced the most colossal mess of the entire process.

There was no discernible difference in the flavor of the water, which was impressive for a plant-based filter.

In contrast to the pitcher, this Pur dispenser requires the filter to be soaked for 15 minutes before to usage before it can be used.

Because it was smaller than the ZeroWater and required longer to fill than the Brita of the same size, it was a good middle-of-the-road alternative.

I especially liked the digital “filter replacement” feature, which illuminates red when it’s time to replace the filter cartridge. The performance of this dispenser was quite close to that of the bigger Brita pitcher we tested, but it did not outperform our winner.

Brita Standard Metro Water Filter Pitcher

You may use this one-person water filtration pitcher if you live alone or in a small apartment. Because it only contains 5 cups of water, you’ll most likely need to refill it several times during the day if you’re consuming the recommended daily water consumption. Refilling, on the other hand, is a breeze. Given that all Brita filters advocate pouring out the first three filters, we followed this recommendation and found that it took less than 10 minutes with this particular model. Because the reservoir tank accounts for around half of the whole pitcher’s volume, it took very little time to complete.

  1. If you have a lot of free space, this filter should absolutely be on your list to look at!
  2. The reservoir tank to total dispenser size ratio was excellent, and this dispenser was the fastest to fill out of all of the larger-size dispensers.
  3. This pitcher is the heaviest on our list, despite having the highest capacity (23 cups), and it is also the heaviest by a long by.
  4. This approach has a number of disadvantages, one of which is the dispenser.
  5. Alternatively, the Brita Longlast UltraMax is an excellent choice if you want a big capacity filter.

The 10-cup pitcher contains more water than the competition. The use of BPA-free polycarbonate and a bamboo handle contribute to the product’s environmentally friendly and stylish appearance.

Pros: What we enjoyed about the Soma Water Pitcher were the following:

  • Made with ecologically friendly materials
  • A unique design. It has a capacity of 10 cups of water. The design is clean and uncluttered

Cons:Before making a purchase, consider the following factors:

How We Tested Water Filter Pitchers

Hello, my name is Julia MacDougall, and I’m the Senior Scientist at Reviewed. Please accept my introduction. I’ve put a wide range of items through their paces, including rakes, shredders, backpacks, smart thermostats, and coding games for youngsters, among others.

Having used a water filter pitcher for many years, I was delighted to get my hands on nine different water pitchers and put them all up against each other to see which one was the most effective.

The Tests

Photograph courtesy of Jackson Ruckar of reviewed.com We measured the amount of free chlorine, total chlorine, pH, and total dissolved solids (TDS) in each water sample we collected. I divided the testing for water pitcher filters into two parts: the quantitative and the qualitative. The quantitative testing was completed first. For the quantitative analysis, I used chlorine test strips, pH test strips, and TDS meters to measure the difference in total chlorine, free chlorine, water acidity, and total dissolved solids between before and after each product filtered our test water before and after each product filtered our test water after each product filtered our test water (Free chlorine is a subset of chlorine products, whereas total chlorine comprises both free chlorine and another subset of chlorine products known aschloramines, which are formed by ammonia and nitrogen.) ( Photograph courtesy of Jackson Ruckar of reviewed.com We timed how long it took each pitcher to filter 3.5 cups of water and documented the results.

  • The time it took for each product to thoroughly filter 3.5 cups of water was also recorded; 3.5 cups is close to the maximum capacity of the reservoirs found in the vast majority of these pitchers.
  • I tested the water in each pitcher twice before it was lent out for casual use and twice after it was returned.
  • Each volunteer took a pitcher home with them and used it on a daily basis for two weeks before completing a survey that questioned questions regarding the pitcher’s simplicity of use, water flavor, filtration speed, and ease of handling, among other things.

  • We used a variety of control samples in the taste test, including distilled water, unfiltered tap water, and filtered water from our office’s water dispensers.

What Contaminants Are in Tap Water?

Photograph courtesy of Jackson Ruckar of reviewed.com Due to an increase in the amount of water impurities, water filter pitchers can help you enhance the quality of your drinking water by removing these toxins. The Environmental Protection Agency defines contaminants in drinking water as anything other than water molecules. There is a broad number of chemicals that may be detected in tap water, all of which are harmful. Some are well-known, such as lead and chlorine, while others, such as fluoride, are helpful.

  • The fact that fluoride has been added to certain municipal tap water at acceptable proportions in the United States for almost 70 years has been proved to significantly enhance oral health in both children and adults, despite the fact that it can cause health concerns in high doses.
  • Another group of contaminants that could potentially be present in tap water is mercury.
  • As you might assume, consuming any of these toxins in big quantities or for an extended length of time is not a good idea; a water pitcher filter that is rated to eliminate these contaminants can go a long way toward alleviating your concerns about the quality of your drinking water.
  • The National Sanitation Foundation and the American National Standards Institute (NSF/ANSI) have jointly developed the standards.

With respect to a particular product, these criteria only apply to specific pollutants mentioned on the pitcher’s performance data sheet, which frequently includes both the kind of contaminant and the quantity of each contaminant that was eliminated during third-party lab testing.

What Affects Taste?

Photograph courtesy of Jackson Ruckar of reviewed.com The flavor of filtered water is influenced by three key factors: minerality/TDS/pH, temperature, and the presence or absence of pollutants. People disagree on whether water should be tasteless or if it should have any flavor, despite the fact that we all agree that it should be as clean as possible. Regardless of which side of the debate you are on, there are three key aspects that influence the flavor of your water: total dissolved solids (TDS) or mineral content, temperature, and the presence or absence of pollutants.

Minerality/Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)/pH

Minerality refers to the mineral content of water, which may be determined by measuring the total dissolved solids (TDS) and pH. The minerals are mostly composed of inorganic salts such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and others. The presence of high TDS levels is associated with water that has a greater flavor; the taste may be salty or bitter. pH, which is a measure of acidity in water, is defined on a scale ranging from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (neutral) (extremely basic). Even though the pH of most water is 7 (neutral), there are certain pitchers, known as alkaline water pitchers, that substantially elevate the pH of the water in order to provide users with good health and hydration advantages.

Conversely, it has been noticed that water with extremely low TDS readings has a “flat” taste to it, indicating that the water has been treated.

The temperature of the water is one of the most important aspects affecting its flavor. The taste of very cold water is more pleasant; nevertheless, the extreme temperature also numbs the tongue, preventing it from completely enjoying the water’s flavor. When ice cream melts, the flavor becomes substantially sweeter than when it is served in a cone. The distinct flavors become considerably more noticeable to the taster when the temperature is raised to a higher level.

In most cases, the aforementioned pollutants are not present in sufficient numbers to have an impact on the taste of the water. Nonetheless, when used in big enough quantities, lead may really provide a mildly astringent flavor to water. Because of their sweet taste, lead paint chips are particularly dangerous to tiny children, who eat them because they are delicious and are unaware of the dangers they pose to their health.

Why Don’t Identical Filters in Different Pitchers Make Water Taste the Same?

Photograph courtesy of Jackson Ruckar of reviewed.com Even though the filters in the pitchers are the same, the taste of filtered water might differ from one pitcher to the next. Why are the taste test results different when the same filters are used in various pitchers, if the filters are the same? This issue is mostly concerned with the differences in taste between the various Brita filters (Standard and Longlast) and Pur filters (Standard and Longlast) (StandardandLead Reduction). The filters that come standard with the pitchers are intended to function with certain pitchers, and the pitchers themselves are designed to work with specific filters.

By changing a different, but compatible, filter, the water will spend more or less time in the filter than it would have spent in the filter if it had been used for the original purpose, which might influence the flavor of the water.
