Step 2: Washing
Before beginning assembly, wash your hands well and thoroughly clean the following parts with warm water and dish soap. Do not clean the Black Berkey Filters with water! Wash the lid, the top chamber, the lower chamber, the spigot, and the plugs for the holes. After properly rinsing, set the upper and lower chambers on their flat bottoms to ensure that they do not roll off the countertop.
Step 3: Assembly
- Assemble the knob to the lid in the manner indicated, using the screw and washer that were given. Hand-tightening is the only option.
Step 3.2 – Install Hole Plugs
- Skip this step if you are using enough Black Berkey filters to completely cover all of the holes in the top chamber
- Otherwise, proceed to step 2. Installation of the screw and hand tightening of the nut is accomplished by placing one washer on the inside of the chamber and one washer on the outside of the chamber. Hole plugs should be installed diagonally to ensure that the weight of the filters is distributed properly. Install hole plugs into all of the holes that will not be containing a filter when it is completed.
Step 3.3 – Base Ring
- Fixing the rubber base ring to the bottom of the lower chamber is the next step. The bottom chamber is prevented from sliding by the rubber base ring.
Step 3.4 – Anti-Airlock Clip
- Attach the anti-air lock clip to the bottom chamber of the engine. Clip in the clip such that the flat section of the clip is on the inside of the bottom chamber when it is closed.
Step 3.5 – Spigot
- All of the washers and the hex nut should be removed from your spigot. Placing the black washer with the beveled edge towards the exterior of the bottom chamber is the best option. Insert the threaded end of the Berkey Spigot into the hole in the bottom chamber
- This will seal the hole. Then, using the flat black washer and hex nut, tighten down the threaded end of the spigot. The spigot should be turned so that it is upside down. Hex nut should be hand tightened
Step 3.5 – Spigot (continued)
- All of the washers and the hex nut should be removed from the spigot. Orient the beveled edge of the black washer so that it faces the exterior of the bottom chamber
- And The threaded end of the Berkey Spigot should be inserted into a hole in the bottom chamber. Then, using the flat black washer and hex nut, fasten them to the threaded end of the spigot
- And The spigot should be turned such that it is upside down now. tighten the hex nut using your hands
Step 4: Priming the Black Berkey Filters

Most customers prefer to prime their Black Berkey filters with Prime-Rite, which is displayed in Step 1 as the blue “Universal Primer” and in the photographs below as the blue “Universal Primer” listed in the Kit Contents. Videos demonstrating alternative priming techniques for both pressurized and non-pressurized priming may be accessed by following the link provided above.
Step 4.1
- To install the faucet, first attach the blue silicone primer to it. Pull the blue primer up as far as it will go onto the water spout as you can.
Step 4.2
- Take the wingnut and washer off of the Black Berkey Filter and set them aside.
Step 4.3
- Holding the Black Berkey Filter in one hand, carefully press the stem of the Black Berkey Filter into the blue primer with the other hand.
Step 4.4
- Continue to use one hand to keep the filter in place. With your other hand, adjust the faucet slightly to the left or right to obtain a low but constant water flow Only cold water should be used.
Step 4.5
- Continue to use one hand to hold the filter. By turning on the faucet with your other hand, you may generate a modest but consistent flow of water. Water should only be used at room temperature.
Step 4.6
- Maintain one-handed control of the filter. Then, using your other hand, gently turn on the faucet to provide a low but consistent water flow. Only use cold water
Step 4.7
- Continue to prime the filter element until water begins to bead out of all of the filter element’s surfaces. Allow approximately 1 minute for the priming process to be completed.
Step 4.8
- Remove the filter from the blue primer and turn off the water. Place the filter on a clean surface and set it away. Leaving the blue silicone primer attached to the faucet, continue the priming process until all of the Black Berkey Filters have been primed. Continue on to the next stage
Step 5: Priming the Berkey Fluoride Filters
Alternatively, you may see a video lesson on priming the Berkey Fluoride Filters by clickinghere or scanning the QR code below. To clarify, most customers choose to prime their Berkey fluoride filters with Prime-Rite, which is the blue “Universal Primer” indicated in the Kit Contents in Step 1 as well as in the photographs below. Other priming techniques can be found by clicking on the link above.
Step 5.1
- To install the faucet, first attach the blue silicone primer to it. Pull the blue primer up as far as it will go onto the water spout as you can.
Step 5.2
- Remove both of the blue plugs from each filter and set them aside. Locate the threaded end of the filter and screw in the Prime Rite Fluoride Filter Adaptor until the filter is completely installed. Hand-tightening is the only option.
Step 5.3
- Incorporate the white fluoride filter adapter into the blue silicone primary by gently pressing it in.
Step 5.4
- Continue to hold the filter in one hand while using your other hand to slowly turn on the faucet to create a low but continuous flow of water in the other. Only cold water should be used.
Step 5.5
- The water flow rate should be reduced if the blue primer inflates or if there is considerable water leaking surrounding the blue primer.
Step 5.6
- Cover the bottom of the filter with your finger to prevent it from getting dirty. Allow approximately 5 seconds for water to fill the filter. After that, turn off the water.
Step 5.7
- Continue to cover the bottom of the filter with your fingers. Remove the filter from the blue primer and set it aside. Shake the filter vigorously for 1 minute after covering both ends with plastic wrap.
Step 5.8
- Reattach the filter to the blue primer with one hand while holding the filter in the other. With your other hand, adjust the faucet slightly to the left or right to obtain a low but constant water flow Only cold water should be used.
Step 5.9
- Continue to prime for another 2 to 3 minutes, or until the water comes out of the filter clear. If required, repeat steps 5.3 through 5.8 again.
Step 5.10
- Remove the adapter from the system. Place the filter on a clean surface and set it away. Keep the blue silicone primer attached to the faucet and repeat the priming process until all of the fluoride filters are primed Continue on to the next stage
Step 6: Installing the Black Berkey Filters
- The Black Berkey Filter should have a black rubber washer attached to the stem of it
Step 6.2
- Insert the stem of the Black Berkey Filter into an empty hole on the interior of the upper chamber’s upper chamber’s upper chamber.
Step 6.3
- Thread the wingnut onto the stem of the Black Berkey Filter, which is located on the bottom side of the top chamber
- Tighten the wingnut with your hand until it is secure. Don’t overtighten the screws
Step 6.4
- Guarantee that all filters have a washer directly under the filter and that all hole plugs have a washer on both the inner and outer sides of the upper chamber
- Do not install the fluoride filters at this time to ensure appropriate water purification. Wait until Step 7 is completed before continuing.
Step 7: Performing the Red Dye Test
- Installed Berkey Fluoride Filters should be removed and placed in a safe area before continuing. Fill the top chamber with a few inches of water and check to see if any water is leaking through the hole plugs in the walls. Water should only come out of the stem of the Black Berkey Filter
- Else, the filter will fail. Remove the upper chamber and drain any remaining water
- Lower chamber should be emptied and placed in a secure area.
Step 7.2
- Under each Black Berkey Filter stem, place a clear glass of equal size beneath it. Make certain that the water that comes out of each filter flows into a separate glass.
Step 7.3
- Approximately one teaspoon of red food dye is contained in each of the red food dye vials supplied with your priming kit. Add one teaspoon of red food color for every gallon of water in a separate container and carefully mix it
- In order to completely test most top chambers, 2 gallons of pre-mixed water and dye will be required.
Step 7.4
- Approximately one teaspoon of red food dye is contained in each of the red food dye vials that came with your priming kit. Mix well one teaspoon of red food coloring for every gallon of water in a separate container
- Repeat the process. 2 liters of pre-mixed water and dye will be required for most top chambers in order to complete the testing
Step 7.5
- Allow the water to trickle down into the glasses below from the top chamber
- When the glasses are 3/4 filled, drain the remaining water from the upper chamber. (Please keep in mind that the glasses may fill at somewhat different speeds.)
Step 7.6
- Take a close look at the water in each glass. The water should be crystal clear, with no pink or red tinge to it at all. It is necessary to examine the installation of the concerned filter and ensure that it has been installed correctly as well as properly tightened before repeating the test
- Otherwise, contact your local water treatment facility for assistance. Please get in touch with us if a filter continues to malfunction. Remove everything from the top room and go to step 8
Step 8: Installing the Berkey Fluoride Filters
- Observe the water in each of the three glasses carefully. A clear color should be present in the water, with no pink or red tints. It is necessary to examine the installation of the concerned filter and ensure that it has been installed correctly as well as properly tightened before repeating the test
- Otherwise, contact your local water treatment facility for further assistance. Please get in touch with us if a filter continues to fail. Proceed to step 8 after emptying the top chamber.
Step 9: Preparing your system for use
- Position the upper chamber on top of the lower chamber
- To begin, make certain that the spigot is in the closed position. The upper chamber should be entirely filled with cold or room-temperature water before being covered with the lid. Ensure that water is allowed to filter into the bottom chamber. An extremely little quantity of water may remain in the top chamber following filtering. This initial batch of filtered water should be thrown away.
Step 10: Fill the upper chamber and enjoy!

Today, we’re continuing our education series on the Berkey water filter system by showing you how to set it up for the first time.
We’ve had our Berkey for more than 8 years, and it’s an absolutely crucial element of our healthy living, as well as having a significant influence on the flavor of our water.
This is due to the fact that the filters last for an extremely long time, and once you have the entire system, the only thing you will need to purchase is new filters every few years.
Tips For Setting Up Your Berkey Water System
- The stainless steel canisters should be thoroughly cleaned before assembling the entire system. Unless you prime the filters before installing them, your water will filter at a glacial pace. If you believe the purchase price is too high up front, find out how you may negotiate a lower price here.
Tools you may need:
Berkey Water Filter System: I have a large Berkey water filter system. Metal spigot — this is included in the Berkey package. It is completely optional. We had been using the plastic one for eight years until switching to the metal one lately.
How to Set Up a Berkey Water Filter
Take the silicon ring and set it down on the counter or table. Place the Berkey canister at the bottom of the stack on top of the silicon ring. The silicon ring provides additional stability for the Berkey and prevents it from moving. If you have children, this is ideal since they will not be able to quickly pull it down.
Step 2: Place The Handle On The Lid
Take the silicon ring and set it down on the counter or work surface. The Berkey canister at the bottom should rest on top of the silicone ring. In order to protect the Berkey from slipping, the silicon ring is used to support it. In the event that you have children, this will prevent them from readily removing the fence from the ground.
- Take the silicon ring and set it down on the counter or tabletop. Place the Berkey canister at the bottom of the stack on top of the silicone ring. The silicon ring provides stability for the Berkey and prevents it from slipping about. If you have children, this is a nice feature because it prevents them from quickly pulling it down.
Step 3: Install The Spigot
If you merely buy the normal Berkey, yours will come with a plastic spigot attached to the handle. If you ordered a package deal, yours will come with a stainless steel one included. It has been many years since we have used the plastic spigot and I just recently upgraded to a stainless steel spigot, not only because I prefer stainless steel to plastic, but also because our previous farmhouse had extremely hard water, and the spigot accumulated calcium deposits around the entrance. Regardless of whether you have a stainless steel or a plastic spigot, the installation process is the same.
In addition, the plastic one does not have the metal coverings like the metal one.
- Remove the blue plastic from the two metal washer-looking parts that are attached to the blue plastic
- The metal ring should be positioned on the spigot tube with the round section of it closest to the spigot. Then, using one of the silicon gaskets, secure the spigot tube in place. You won’t have any leaking because of this because it forms a good seal on the Berkey
- Using your fingers, insert the spigot tube into the opening on the bottom canister
- Place the other silicon gasket into the spigot tube on the inside of the canister, and then the metal ring on top of it, with the broader section of the metal ring contacting the silicon gasket. Take the metal nut and tighten it down onto the tube, ensuring sure it is completely secure in place. If your Berkey begins to leak, you will be able to tell that it is not properly secured.
Step 4: Install The Filters
- The black carbon filters will be installed next, and that will be the last step. The black carbon filters, as well as the fluoride/arsenic filters, will be included if you ordered the package deal. Due to the fact that we did not have fluoride or arsenic concerns with our water after testing it, I’ll teach you how to install the black carbon filters. The fluoride filters, on the other hand, are installed in a manner that is very similar. Before installing the filters, check to see that they have been primed. You may find instructions on how to prime themhere. Place the black filter element with the tube down through one of the openings in the top chamber after attaching the gasket to it. Then, using the screw nut, secure it in place. Tighten the screw until it is snug, but do not overtighten or you risk stripping the threads
- Repeat the same for the other black piece.
Step 5: Add The Stoppers Or More Filters
At this point, you have two options: you can either add more black carbon filters to the remaining holes, which will allow it to filter much more quickly, or you may put plugs to the remaining holes. In the past, we’ve never had an issue with the pace of filtration while using only two filters. However, if you read my most recent post, you will recall that I conducted a dye test and discovered that one of the components had been damaged at some time. For the simple reason that they are sold in sets and I don’t want to waste one, I’m going to add the third filter to mine and then plug up the fourth hole.
- Take the stopper and put the little end of it through the hole
- Repeat the same on the opposite side.
Step 6: Test The Berkey Water Filter System
- Fill the upper chamber with water and check to see that the water is flowing out in the correct location. Making sure the water is coming through the filters and not seeping out through any of the nuts or clogged holes are important considerations. Hold it up and look to see if there is any leaking coming through. There is water seeping through the filters and trickling through the filter tubes, which I can see. If there is any water leaking through places where it is not intended to, drain the water and tighten the element screw. Test it once again
Step 7: Finish Up
- Place the top chamber on top of the bottom chamber, fill the top chamber entirely with water, and place the lid on top of the container. To ensure that any sediment in the filter is removed, run the water through the filter several times before drinking it. You’re all prepared to go! Take pleasure in your tasty, purified water
In order to be certain that your filters are still filtering correctly after a long period of time, you need learn how to do a thered dye test on them.

Materials required include:
- A Berkey water filtration system
- A funnel
- A hose
- A tube
- Fill the Berkey water filter using a bucket and spigot, which is included.
Step 1: Unpack Your Filter
The Berkey water filter has to be assembled when it is received, so be sure to do it right away. There are a few different components to this puzzle, and the directions are really straightforward. The first step is to take your filter out of its packaging. Removal of the top, bottom, and side panels will be required to complete this task. The filter will be visible inside the unit after you have removed the panels. There are a few different elements that you will need to put together in order to complete the project.
In order to install the cartridge, you must first remove the cartridge’s top and slide it into the bottom of the housing.
To secure the housing in place, twist the top of the housing clockwise.
Step 2: Assemble the Upper and Lower Chambers
It has two chambers: an upper chamber and a lower chamber, which are located on each side of the filter. The filters for the water filter are located in the top chamber, while the water itself is located in the bottom chamber:
- Using the filter assembly, insert it into the bottom of upper chamber to complete the construction of the chambers Glue the top of the upper chamber to the filter assembly, making sure that the seals are correctly aligned. Glue the bottom of the top chamber to the bottom of the lower chamber, ensuring certain that the seals are correctly aligned.
Step 3: Install the Black Berkey Filters
You will need to unscrew the water filter top and remove the filter cartridge before you can begin installing the black Berkey filters. After that, screw in the replacement filter cartridge and screw the top of the water filter back onto the filter. Finally, fill the water reservoir halfway with water and screw the water filter’s top onto the reservoir.
Step 4: Prime the Filters
It’s time to prime your Berkey water filter after it’s been installed and configured properly. Start by running cold water through the filters for a few minutes to get them ready. This will aid with the removal of any built-up dirt or chemicals that may have accumulated on the filters over time.

The Berkey will immediately begin filtering and delivering clean, healthful water once it is turned on. After learning how to properly install a Berkey water filter, you will be able to rest confident that you will always have clean, safe water to drink.
What’s On Your Mind?
I’m going to provide you with some useful suggestions and advice that should assist you in configuring your Berkeysystem. This is not intended to be a replacement for the instructions that came with your system, but rather to provide clarification on some common concerns that our customers frequently ask us about while they are installing their system. Prime Filters are the best available. It is important that you do not skip this step. The Black Berkey filters must be primed before to use in order to function effectively.
- The box containing the Black filters will also include one tan rubber washer (commonly known as the priming button), two blackwashers, and two wing nuts in addition to the filters.
- This will provide you with a “handle” with which to hold the filter.
- Push the filter, which has a rubber priming button, up to the faucet to activate it.
- I would recommend allowing the filter to sweat for a longer period of time than the instructions suggest.
- Many people are under the impression that the tan rubber washer is intended to be utilized in the assembly of the Berkey.
- You should maintain the priming button in case you decide to store the unit and need to re-prime thefilters at a later date.
- The only difference is that you must prime both sides of the filters, rather than just one.
Priming will eliminate any manufacturing dust that has accumulated inside the filters throughout the production process.
Placing the black washer on the stem of the filter and passing it through one of the holes in the top water chamber will complete the installation.
The wingnut on the other side of the filter is used to secure it to the chamber.
The number of holes in the upper water chamber may vary depending on the system you have and how many filters you purchased for your system.
Remember to use one washer on the exterior and one on the inside when joining the spigot to the bottom chamber, and to tighten the nut tightly when you’ve finished.
This is done to ensure that the seal where the spigot joins to the tank is satisfactory.
Every now and then, we receive a call from a client who discovered a pool of water on their floor when they woke up in the morning due to a spigot that had not been properly installed.
Because the stem of the black filter may penetrate the screen that holds the filtering medium within the PF-2 filter if you screw it in for more than 8 turns, it is suggested that you only screw it in for 8 turns.
It is advised that you discard the first two or three batches of water once they have been boiled.
Using the example above, if the lower chamber is only 1/3 full, the upper chamber can be replenished by 2/3rds of its capacity. For example, if the bottom chamber is half full, the higher chamber can be supplied by half, and so on.
Berkey Water Filter – The World’s Best Personal Water Purifier Systems
- Water purification devices like Berkey’s can readily cleanse regular tap water, as well as raw, untreated water from remote lakes and streams, without the need for energy. In addition to eliminating harmful impurities like as bacteria and viruses, chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, fluoride, and other harmful contaminants, Berkey also removes helpful and nutritious minerals that are essential for maintaining a healthy body and mind. The cost of water filtration is only approximately two cents per gallon, which is quite affordable. There are several water filters on the market that make the claim to be a water purifier, but they do not match the performance standards necessary to be classified as one. A water treatment equipment must be able to eliminate at least 99.9999 percent of harmful bacteria and lower viruses by 99.9999 percent in order to be certified as a water purification device. Purification Elements like the Black Berkey Purification Elements may be categorized as water purifiers since they eliminate 99.9999999 percent of harmful bacteria and 99.999 percent of viruses from water, which is much more than the requirement. The Black Berkey Purification Elementformulation has been evaluated and found to be superior to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 by State and EPA authorized laboratories. The Black Berkey filters (purification elements) have been shown to be capable of reducing viruses down to the nanoscale scale, with a measured range of 24-26 nanometers
- 24-26 nanometers is.024 to.026 microns in size. We have demonstrated through extensive testing and research that Berkey water filters remove undesired pollutants to levels that are below measurable limits. The usage of phrases such as “non-detectable” to characterize the ability of a water filter to eliminate dangerous contaminants was uncommon if not non-existent prior to the publication of these test findings. When it comes to Fluoride and looking to remove Fluoride from water, our Fluoride Removal Filters PF-2 are the best choice. They can decrease Fluoride and Arsenic by more than 95%. Fluoride has a 99.9 percent purity
- Viruses have a 99.9 percent purity
- Pathogenic bacteria have a 99.9 percent purity
- Lead has a 99.9 percent purity
- Arsenic has a 99.9 percent purity

Water Filtration Speed: If you believe that the water is filtering too slowly, please keep in mind that when there is higher water pressure in the top chamber, the water will always filter more quickly. Additionally, priming the Black Berkey filters opens the pores, allowing water to pass through.
Re-priming the filters may be necessary to confirm that priming has been performed completely.
If any of them fail, please contact us and we will arrange for a replacement to be sent to you by the manufacturer.

Then, using a wrench, secure the nut at the rear of the spigot and turn the spigot itself that last quarter turn, using the spigot as leverage to achieve a more precise turn.
Over time, the washers might dry out and become hard, and the olive oil can soften them, allowing for a good seal to be achieved once again.
