How To Change Culligan Water Filter

How to Replace a Whole-House Water-Filter Sediment Cartridge

I just replaced a sediment cartridge in my whole-house water filter, and it was more simpler than I anticipated. Here’s how I went about it.

Why Use a Whole House Filtration System?

Oh, CULLIGAN MAN, how I adore you! When a home is powered by a properly treated private well or when your water has a high mineral and debris content, you may expect to find an excess of minerals, sediment, and even iron in your drinking, bathing, and cooking water, which will require filtration. It used to be that many individuals would purchase and install a whole-house filtration system specifically for this reason. When we came across one of these homes, we realized that it had been much too long since the sediment cartridge had been changed, so we decided to take on the job.

Changing a water-sediment cartridge was a rather simple procedure, even for inexperienced people like us; here’s how we went about it.

Water Filter Cartridge Replacement Guide

Once you’ve read through the textual preview of steps 1 through 7 described below, a picture-by-picture tutorial will walk you through the filter-change procedure one photo at a time, with easy-to-follow instructions for each photo. I recommend that you use safety goggles while working on the project since water can shoot directly into your face and may include particles from the caught silt from the previous filter. A bucket should be placed beneath the water-filtration assembly to capture any water that may leak out of the housing over the course of the project.

Preview of Project Steps 1–7

  1. Turn off the water mains and faucets. To relieve pressure, push the red pressure-relief button. Remove the handle from the ON or BYPASS position and unscrew the casing. Remove the huge O-ring and set it aside after wiping it clean. Remove the used filter cartridge and throw it away. Dish soap and warm water should be used to clean the housing. Completely rinse the dish. Fill the remaining third with water. To disinfect, add approximately 1 tablespoon of bleach and clean well. Thoroughly rinse the dish
  2. Clean silicone grease should be applied to the O-ring before it is reinserted into the groove. It is critical to ensure that the O-ring is seated level in the groove before proceeding. If this is not the case, the housing may not be properly sealed. Reinstall the replacement filter cartridge over the standpipe located at the bottom of the housing
  3. Screw the housing onto the cap and hand-tighten the screw threads. DO NOT TIGHTEN TOO MUCH. Check to see that the cap standpipe fits into the cartridge
  4. Then turn on the water supply. When using a valve-in-head device, slowly turn the handle to the ON position. To relieve the pressure, push the pressure-release button (if present). Before leaving the installation, make sure there are no leaks.

Important Information Regarding Your New Filter Change

Immediately after fitting the whole-house sediment-filter cartridge, turn on the water! It is necessary to run your house water for about 5 minutes after the filter has been replaced and the housing has been completely sealed before utilizing any of it. If you use tap water for drinking and bathing, it is a good idea to run it for approximately 30 seconds before using it for any other consumer use. If water sediments have made their way into your faucet system, it will be obvious as soon as the water starts to flow from your taps.

K9keystrokes to turn off the water supply

Step 1: Water Supply Off and Pressure Release

Turn off the water supply at the valve-in-head or the main water feed to the filter, whichever is more convenient. Release any built-up pressure by pressing the red button. Caution should be exercised since a torrent of water will shoot out when the release button is activated. WARNING: The red button may be used as an excellent prank on someone who is not aware of the water jet that comes out of the housing pressure-relief valve when it is pressed. Just make sure that everyone is wearing safety eyewear!

Step 2: Remove Housing and Clean O-Ring

Remove the huge O-ring from the housing unit by unscrewing it. The O-ring is located within the housing and seems to be a big diameter, but thin, black rubber band in appearance.

Remove the lens from the housing and wash it down with a soft cloth before setting the lens aside until you’re ready to reinstall it. Check to see if it is still in excellent condition; if not, place an order for a new one. K9keystrokes lubricate the O-Ring

Step 3: Dispose of Old Filter and Clean Housing

The big O-ring should be removed once the housing unit is unscrewed. The O-ring is contained within the housing and seems to be a big diameter, but thin, black rubber band in appearance. Remove the lens from the housing and wash it clean with a soft cloth before setting the lens aside until you’re ready to reinstall it. Check to see whether it is still in excellent condition; if not, place an order for a replacement. K9keystrokes: lubricate the O-Ring

Step 4: Lubricate O-Ring

Remove the huge O-ring from the housing unit by unscrewing the screws that hold it together. The O-ring is contained within the housing and seems to be a big diameter, but thin, black rubber band in appearance. You’ll need to wipe it off with a soft cloth and set it aside until it’s time to put it back into its housing. Check to see whether it is still in excellent condition; if it is not, get a replacement. K9keystrokes: lubricate the O-ring

Step 5: Install New Water-Filter Cartridge

Now it’s time to replace the filter. When you look into the housing, you will notice a standpipe positioned in the center of the base. It is a molded component in the shape of a circle with a short plastic-looking pipe projecting from the center (See photo5). It is critical that the filter be appropriately installed over this since this is the water access port, and as a result, this is where all of your water will be coming from for filtering before being delivered to your house taps. Make an effort to keep the filter centered on the standpipe.

Step 6: Screw Housing to Cap

By hand-screwing the filter cartridge to the cap, you may replace the housing with the filter cartridge. Make sure that the filter is centered over the cap’s standpipe before installing it. Despite the fact that you won’t be able to see where the standpipe is, you will be able to feel it glide effortlessly into the cartridge aperture. Caution should be taken not to overtighten the housing as this might cause it to break.

Step 7: Turn on Water Supply and Test Pressure

Turn the water supply back on by slowly rotating the intake lever. Caution should be exercised since if the water rushes in too rapidly, it might cause the housing to blow off and the unit to be destroyed. As a result, operate the intake valve gently and feel the pressure build up as it enters the housing so you can keep it under control until it fills. We replaced a filter with a valve-in-head device, but the same level of caution should be exercised with any water supply input that is utilized.

Water will rooster-tail out of the device, so be prepared to get sprayed a bit (or place a towel over the unit while conducting this step).

Water-Filter Cartridge-Replacement Project Conclusion

After finishing the filter replacement procedure, we turned on the home water and let it run for a few minutes. When we turned on the faucets for the first time, a loud, strange noise erupted from the pipes. It was somewhat shocking at first, until we comprehended what had happened and what had caused it. Initially, the water seemed to be filthy and spit and sputtered sporadically for a period of time. Even simple tasks such as flushing the toilets and checking the shower provided this type of feeling.

Yet another unanticipated project on this historic property?” Eventually, we found that all of the banging and spitting had been caused by air that had gotten into the pipes during the construction process.

Tip

Depending on the kind of Culligan filter you have, you should replace the filter cartridge every six months to one year or whenever you detect a change in the taste or odor of your drinking water. Only the cold water supply line should be used to connect your Culligan water filter. Warm or hot water that has been resting in the filter for an extended period of time may encourage bacteria development.

Warning

Depending on the kind of Culligan filter you have, you should replace the filter cartridge every six months to one year, or whenever you detect a change in the taste or odor of your water. It is necessary to install your Culligan water filter just on the cold water supply line. A prolonged amount of time with warm or hot water in the filter might result in bacteria development.

  1. Turning the spigot handle in the under-sink cabinet where your filter is housed in a clockwise direction by hand will switch off the cold water supply to the filter. Open the cold water faucet at the sink until no more water is dripping from the tap. Placing a towel below the filter cartridge in the under-sink cabinet can help to catch any water that may leak when the cartridge is removed. The filter cartridge should be turned completely by hand until an arrow points from its “Locked” position on the filter head to its “Unlocked” position
  2. This should take about a minute. The filter cartridge should be carefully slid downward in order to be released from the filter head and discarded
  3. Then, with the arrow pointing to the “Unlocked” position on your filter head, slide the new filter cartridge up and into place on your filter head. Rotate the cartridge by hand until the arrow indicates that it is in the “Locked” position
  4. Turn the spigot handle in the opposite direction of the clock to reactivate the cold water supply. Turn on the cold water faucet at the sink and allow it to run for 10 minutes to flush the system.

Make the Time to Replace Your Home Water Filters

Published on May 16, 2013 by Timothy Heidemann, Product Technical Support Specialist. Last updated on June 21, 2021. No matter if it’s for drinking or for general usage (cleaning, cooking, showering, etc.), we want the greatest water we can get our hands on, no matter what. When the quality of that water, or the source of that water, is called into question, the do-it-yourselfers of the world want to take matters into their own hands to resolve the situation. After carefully selecting and installing a Culligan water filtration system in your house, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the results of your efforts (great-tasting water that is).

  1. It can, in fact, with a little amount of upkeep and care.
  2. Nevertheless, let’s be honest.
  3. In order for you to understand how simple and straightforward it is to maintain your drinking water filter system, whether it is adrinking water pitcher or an under-the-sink water filtration system, let us first go over the fundamentals.
  4. In order to ensure that the cartridge element of a water filter has an approximate lifespan measured in both gallons and months, it is constructed.
  5. This, on the other hand, poses a really interesting topic.
  6. The pace at which water flows is an important measure.
  7. Another important measure of the effectiveness of drinking water filters that use carbon (GAC) media is a change in the taste or odor of the water.

Make a note in your calendar every time you replace a cartridge – the day you replaced the cartridge as well as the cartridge’s expiration date, which is printed on the product box.

It is important not to overextend the life of the filter beyond its specified lifespan, since this may result in a decrease in the quality of your water supply.

A minimum need for planned maintenance should be the inspection of the O-Ring gaskets, which are used to prevent leakage and should be oiled in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

However, while petroleum jelly can be used in an emergency, the petroleum will damage the O-Ring over time.

Housing sumps should be cleansed with bleach on a regular basis.

Take advantage of this chance to inspect the surface for evidence of wear or stress marks that might indicate the onset of cracks.

Once your unit has been installed, it is important to inspect it on a regular basis.

If you have any questions regarding filter maintenance, you may contact your local Culligan Expert, who is a trusted individual who is knowledgeable about the product and the water quality in your region.

Unfortunately, nothing is permanent.

Water is continually changing as municipal water treatment facilities struggle to keep up with rising populations, property development, and aging infrastructures, all while maintaining high quality standards.

It is recommended that you get your water tested every one to two years to ensure that your water filter is matching your unique requirements.

As is true with many of life’s routine duties, the key to success is simply making the time to educate oneself and accept responsibility for one’s actions.

When to Replace Drinking Water Filters

Date last updated: June 17, 2021 15th of May, 2013 Let’s play a game. What is the most effective strategy to ensure that your drinking water continues to taste fantastic for as long as possible – from the moment you install a drinking water system to months or years later? It is critical that you update your water filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. In the event that you wait too long above the manufacturer’s suggested time period to replace your water filter, there is a possibility that the water filter will not operate as intended, potentially resulting in decreased water quality.

  • Typically, this is based on water use – but this may vary greatly across families and homes, and keeping track of how much water has passed through your water filter can be a tedious task that is easily forgotten when life gets busy.
  • This will ensure that you know exactly when to replace them.
  • Furthermore, your local Culligan Expert is well-versed in the specific water conditions of the area, and will work with you to develop a plan that is appropriate for your water and how much water you consume.

How to Change the Filters on Culligan’s AC30 Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System

Hello, my name is Bill and I work with Ising’s Culligan Water. This video will teach how to change the filters on an AC30 reverse osmosis drinking water system, which we will demonstrate in the next video. When it comes to the AC30, there are basically three filters. There are two sorts of carbon filters: one is a pre-filter, and the other is a carbon filter. One kind is a GAC, which is typically used for wells and other similar applications. The other type of block is a carbon block, which is what we generally use for municipal water treatment.

  • Typically, the housing is supported by a mounting bracket.
  • Using a quarter-inch tube, connect the inlet side, which is right here, to a valve once you’ve turned off the supply line (a quarter-turn will shut it off).
  • Make sure that it is turned off and that it is pointed down or up, depending on the position, and then turn off your holding tank; a quarter turn will also turn it off.
  • The membrane is included within number three.
  • In order to remove these clips, you must first remove them from their positions.
  • You’ll be able to see the filter if you pull the clip out and wriggle it down.
  • Replace the old filter with the new one and reinstall the unit.

Do only one filter at a time because it is easy to lose track of where the housings are supposed to go.

The only difference between position one and position two is that the housings in position one and two do not contain a plug.

Water will be running out on a continual basis.

And again, the carbon filter is subjected to the same treatment.

The most efficient approach to remove them is to move them forward and down, drop them into the housing, and then dump them into your sink.

Using a bottle brush and some soapy water, you may clean your teeth if you want to.

It’s as simple as rinsing it off and putting it back on.

It’s the carbon post-filter, and it’s looking for a B, of course.

It’s commonly located adjacent to the unit on the opposite side of it, on top of it, or even on the bottom of it, depending on the situation.

What it does is eliminate any extra scents or tastes that may enter the unit through the vents that are not ordinarily present in the air.

The procedure consists of pushing in on the tube while holding the ring, pulling out the tubing, and installing the new one.

That’s all there is to it when it comes to changing filters.

RO and Filter Change Tips

Although your Culligan Drinking water system is intended to provide years of trouble-free operation, it does require periodic maintenance and yearly filter replacements to remain in proper functioning order. We’ll go through a few of the more frequently asked questions that customers have regarding changing the filters in their drinking water system in this section. Specific, step-by-step directions may be found in your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual.

Filter Change Frequency

Your drinking water system employs a variety of filters, each of which is responsible for a specific role throughout the purification process. Pre-Membrane filters, post-Membrane filters, and the Membrane itself are the three types of filters that may be found in a membrane system, respectively. When excess sediment and organic material, such as chlorine, are removed by the pre-filter(s), the water is ready to go through the reverse osmosis process (seeHow Reverse Osmosis Works). Some systems perform this function with a single integrated filter, whilst other systems employ separate sediment and carbon filters to do the operation.

Similarly, the post-membrane filter(s) polish the water to a high degree of polish.

The post filter(s), once again, should be modified on a yearly basis, independent of the details of your system’s configuration.

Reverse Osmosis Membrane

The Reverse Osmosis Membrane — the other half of the equation – is typically the most perplexing to understand. In the water treatment industry, this semi-permeable membrane is referred to as an ultrafilter since it operates at the molecular level to remove anything from lead and arsenic to viruses in the source water. If the pre-filters are replaced on a regular basis, this membrane will last five to seven years in most home systems, depending on the usage. Of course, every source of water is different, and the life of your membrane will vary depending on the quality of your source water, the volume of water cleaned, and the frequency with which your pre-filter is replaced, among other factors.

An analysis of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is performed to determine the present state of the membrane, and our service specialists do this analysis every time we change the filters for our customers.

Keep in mind to mark them (both before and after) and bring them in to our office for testing — there is no fee for this service.

Turning Off the System

In order to avoid excessive water leaking when replacing filters, it is vital to remember the right sequence for shutting off the faucets. The most effective method is to begin at the beginning. First and foremost, locate the power supply connector. In most cases, we will connect to the cold water supply for your kitchen sink during the installation. At the connection, there will be a little valve (typically blue in color). Rotate that valve 90 degrees so that it is perpendicular to the supply line — the water to your system has now been cut off, but your work is not over yet.

Allow it to run until it comes to a complete halt.

As soon as the vast majority of the water has been drained from the system, you may close the valve on top of the water storage tank.

A little amount of water is likely to remain in the system, but it should be modest and easily managed with a towel or two.

Sanitizing the System

It is advised that you clean the system after changing filters on a regular basis. Some web forums recommend using a weak bleach solution for this purpose. While bleach will not destroy your membrane, the chlorine in it will decrease the life of your membrane and cause damage to the rubber seals and gaskets that maintain your system water tight. Instead, we propose that you use ordinary peroxide, which can be acquired at any pharmacy. The addition of a capful of bleach to the bottom of the sediment filter housing will sterilize the whole system when you execute the rinse step of a typical filter replacement.

Rinsing the Replacement Filters

In the owner’s handbook or on the internet, you may have read or seen that you should “rinse” the new filters before changing them. This is correct; however, do not rinse them with tap water afterward. Because of this, they will be contaminated before you ever put them into service. It is preferable to place them in their appropriate housings and then run two or three tanks of water through the system before putting them into regular use. Replace all of the filters and reconnect all of the fittings when they have been replaced.

  • You will be able to hear the water running through the system.
  • Drain the system in the same manner as previously by turning on the faucet.
  • Repeat the process once more.
  • Your drinking water system is now fully operational.
  • Annual filter replacements are also included in the price of your service agreement if you rent your home drinking water system from our company.

So all you have to do is request a service visit, and we will take care of your drinking water system in the manner that only a Culligan qualified specialist can.
