Refrigerator – Replacing the Water Filter
It is recommended that you change the water filter in your refrigerator every six (6) months or after every 200 gallons of water that is discharged from it. If the flow of water to the icemaker or dispenser begins to slow, it is necessary to replace the filter on a more frequent basis. Important: When replacing the water filter, there is no need to switch off the water supply to the refrigerator. To remove and replace the MWF or XWF Filter Cartridge, follow these steps:
- Before removing the old filter, lay a piece of cloth beneath it to catch any water that may fall when the filter is removed
- Grasp the filter and turn it to the left until it comes to a complete stop. While you are spinning the filter, carefully take it away from the filter head with your other hand. Maintain the filter’s level in order to reduce water leakage. If the filter does not come loose readily, it is possible that air has become trapped inside. When you press in on the water dispenser, the filter should drop straight out
- Remove and discard the plastic cover off the replacement filter. Fill the top of the new filter with tap water to ensure that it is completely filled. Place the filter inside the cartridge holder by matching the arrow on the filter with the arrow on the cartridge holder.
Installation Instructions:In order to make replacement instructions as accessible as possible, replacement instructions are frequently printed on the filter, on the package, or on an insert inside the filter packing. The instructions are also available on the internet. Beginning in mid-2016, the water filter label will provide instructions on how to change the filter. For more information about the filter and how to change it, see the following website:

- Models whose names begin with GDE21, GDE25, GFE24, GFE26, GNE21, GNE25
- Note: If an arrow does not appear on the graphics of the replacement filter, simply insert the filter vertically and rotate it from left to right to complete the installation. When you rotate it, you should be able to feel it lock in place.
To remove and replace the RPWFE Filter Cartridge, follow these steps: Instructions are printed on an insert that is supplied with the filter package. The position of the filter changes depending on the model type. It will be positioned either on the upper left-hand corner of the fresh food interior or within the left refrigerator door on the left side of the refrigerator interior. If you have a BLUE Filter Holder, the following steps must be followed:REMOVING THE FILTER CARTRIDGE:
- Remove the old cartridge by opening the filter door and tugging on the bottom of the cartridge to dislodge it from the filter clips on the inside of the filter housing. Swing the cartridge outward until you hear the ‘click’ of the cartridge holder interacting with the bracket
- Then return the cartridge to its original position. Turn the cartridge one-quarter turn counter-clockwise to activate it. Remove the cartridge by pulling it away from the cartridge holder once it has been twisted out of the way. It is possible that a tiny amount of water will leak out
DELIVERY AND INSTALLATION OF THE FILTER CARTRIDGE:
- Make sure that the filter cartridge and the cartridge holder are aligned such that the word “FRONT” is visible at the top of the unit. Push the cartridge all the way to the back of the device until it is completely enclosed. The filter cartridge should be twisted one-quarter turn clockwise until the word ‘FRONT’ is facing outward
- While making sure the cartridge is firmly placed in the holder, gently swing the filter inward until it is in the desired position. If the filter will not swing freely, check to be that it is correctly aligned and fully inserted within the cartridge holder before proceeding. It is not necessary to have the RED indicators showing.
If you have a GREY Filter Holder, you may remove the filter cartridge as follows:REMOVING THE FILTER CARTRIDGE
- Remove the old cartridge by opening the filter door and tugging on the bottom of the cartridge to allow it to swing outward, as shown in the illustration. When the cartridge is no longer able to swing freely, carefully pull it out of the cartridge holder until it comes loose. It is possible that a tiny amount of water will leak out
DELIVERY AND INSTALLATION OF THE FILTER CARTRIDGE:
- With the word ‘FRONT’ facing outward, center the cartridge in the cartridge holder so that it is in the center of the cartridge. Continue to push the cartridge inward until it is completely inserted. In order for the cartridge holder to be properly installed, the letter ‘FRONT’ must be centered on it. It is not necessary to see the RED lights
- Nevertheless, it is necessary to confirm that the cartridge is fully placed in the holder before gently swinging the filter into position. To determine if the filter will not swing freely, check to be that it is correctly aligned with and fully inserted within the cartridge holder.
More information about the filter and how to change it may be found at:About the RPWFE Water Filter Cartridge or in the following video:About the RPWFE Water Filter Cartridge Purchase a new GE Appliances Water Filter on the company’s website. If there is no filter installed and no filter bypass plug is in place, neither the dispenser nor the icemaker will function.
Side-by- How to Change the Water Filter
Almost all Side-by-Side freezers manufactured nowadays are equipped with an inbuilt water filter. Ice cubes and drinking water are made using filtered water, and the same goes for the ice cubes. The sort of water filter installed in your refrigerator varies depending on the model. The following section contains information on the many types of water filters, as well as how to change them. Cartridge for water filtration is located at:
- Side-by-side refrigerators with a water filter often have the water filter cartridge positioned in the rear, top right corner of the fresh food compartment
- However, this is not always the case. On Side-by-Side Built-In refrigerators, the water filter cartridge is normally situated below the top access panel above the refrigerator doors, above the refrigerator doors themselves. Consult your model’s owner’s handbook for precise information on where to find it. Alternatively, visit Bottom Freezer Refrigerator – How to Change the Water Filter and Top Freezer Refrigerator – How to Change the Water Filter for information on additional refrigerator kinds
When Should the Filter Be Replaced:
- The replacement indication light on your dispenser or temperature control panel will be present on the majority of models. Water filter replacement will be indicated by the illumination of this light
- The color of this light will vary depending on the model. You may get information about the replacement indicator light in your individual model by consulting the owner’s handbook
- For filters that do not have a replaceable indication light, we recommend that you change them every six months or if there is a reduction in the flow of water to the water dispenser or the icemaker, whichever comes first.
Water Filter Cartridge Removal: If you are changing the water filter cartridge, start by slowly twisting the old one to the left until it is completely removed.
Do not pull the cartridge all the way down. It’s possible that a tiny amount of water will trickle down. Important: When replacing the water filter, there is no need to switch off the water supply to the refrigerator. Installing the Water Filter Cartridge is a simple process.

SmartWater filters cannot be used in a refrigerator built before 2001 (save for Water by Culligan filter types), and the refrigerator must be equipped with an adaptor to allow them to be used.
- If you are changing a MWF or GWF SmartWater filter cartridge that is attached to an adapter, you must first remove the adapter before inserting the new cartridge
- Otherwise, the cartridge will not work. If you are replacing an FXRC Water by Culligan filter cartridge, you should keep the adaptor in place while doing so. This adaptor will be kept in the refrigerator until you need to change the cartridges in the future.
- Any time you want, you may go to our GE Appliances PartsAccessories website and shop for GE Appliances Water Filters.
- The filter may be removed by turning it to the left approximately a 14 turn. When using versions without a replacement indication light, paste a month/year sticker on the filter or label the cartridge with the month/year it was placed to serve as a reminder when it is time to change it. Fill the new cartridge halfway with tap water to improve the flow of water from the dispenser once it has been replaced. Turn the filter slowly to the right until it comes to a complete halt. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE FILTER TOO MUCH. With each rotation of the cartridge, it will mechanically lift itself into position. The cartridge will travel approximately one-half revolution. Water should be dispensed from the dispenser for 3 minutes (about 12 gallons) to clean the system and prevent sputtering. Reset the filter indication light if necessary (on models with this feature). Press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER button for several seconds.
It is important to note that we do not currently have a recycling program for water filters. Bypass Plug for Water Filter:
- When a water filter cartridge is not installed in the refrigerator, you must use the water filter bypass plug that was included with the refrigerator. It is not possible to use the water dispenser or the icemaker until the filter or filter bypass plug is installed. If you require a bypass plug but did not receive one with the refrigerator or have misplaced it, a replacement may be obtained at no cost by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, dial 1-800-561-3344

Top Freezer Refrigerator – How to Change the Water Filter
Some Top Freezer freezers are equipped with an integrated water filtering system. The water filter cartridge is placed in the fresh food box in the back of the vehicle, in the top right corner of the vehicle. The information provided below will assist you with replacing the water filter in your refrigerator. When the refrigerator is delivered, the bypass plug for the water filter may be installed in place of the filter cartridge in some circumstances. Before installing the water filter cartridge, it is necessary to remove the bypass plug from the water filter system.
By calling 1-800-GECARES, you may get a bypass plug at no cost if you need it but it was not included with the refrigerator or you have misplaced it.
- Slowly rotate the cartridge to the left until it is no longer visible. It is possible that a tiny amount of water will trickle down. Care should be used when removing the filter cartridge since it may be expelled if air has been trapped in the system. When removing, proceed with care. Remind yourself to replace the filter cartridge every six months by noting it down in your calendar
- Removing the protective foil from the cartridge’s end is necessary. Ensure that the cartridge is properly positioned into the cartridge holder and that it is progressively rotated to the right until it stops. When the cartridge is correctly fitted, you will hear a “click” when the cartridge is locked into place. This is normal. Positioning the blade at the end of the cartridge should be done vertically. Keep the filter from becoming too tight. Retain the cartridge cover in place
- Using the water dispenser (on some models), fill the container with water.
It should be noted that a newly fitted water filter cartridge may cause water to gush from the dispenser when turned on. The bypass plug for the water filter must be used if there is no water filter cartridge installed in the water filter system. The dispenser (on models that are equipped with one) and the icemaker will not function if the filter or filter bypass plug is not installed. Alternative Replacement Filters: Additional filter cartridges (part numbers GSWF and GWF/MWFP) are available for purchase directly from GE Appliances.

How to Replace a Water Filter on a GE Profile Refrigerator
It is critical to update your refrigerator’s water filter on a regular basis. Spiderplay/iStock/Getty Images is the source of this image. With the Profile refrigerators, which are available in a variety of sizes and configurations, GE also offers a variety of filters to go along with them. The filters, which are designated by acronyms such as MSWF, XWF, and GSWF, are all cylindrical in shape, and one of them — the RPWFE — is equipped with a radio transmitter that detects leaks in the water distribution system.
If your refrigerator has a control panel, it will have an LED or a screen that will alert you when the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced.
GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator Water Filter Location
If your GE Profile side-by-side refrigerator is equipped with a water filter, it is either located within the refrigerator compartment at or near the top of the unit’s interior or inside its left-hand door. When you glance inside the refrigerator, you might notice it hanging down from its perch, but some are hidden behind a little door fitted into the side of the compartment or the edge of the door, which you might not notice. The filter should be easy to find, but if you have any problem locating it, refer to the UseCare handbook for your particular model, which may be found on GE’s website.
General Procedure for Replacing the Water Filter
With the exception of the RPWFE filter, installation is essentially the same for all GE water filters, despite the fact that the sizes of the various filters differ. However, if the filter is located within a refrigerator compartment, you should lay a towel under it before removing the old one in order to capture any leftover water that leaks out during the process. You may simply hold the filter and swivel it to the left to detach it from the mounting if it isn’t concealed by a door or other obstruction.
It’s a good idea to fill the replacement with tap water before installing it in order to flush out any trapped air and ensure immediate water flow.
Avoiding GE Refrigerator Water Filter Problems
If your refrigerator has a control panel, the water filter button will have an LED that will illuminate when the filter needs to be replaced. After changing the filter, press and hold this button for three seconds to force the filter sensor to be reset again. On a touch-screen refrigerator, pick Filter from the main menu and then hit Reset to restart the appliance. If your GE refrigerator water dispenser still does not function after changing the filter, it is most likely due to the filter not being correctly placed in the dispenser.
It’s likely that you didn’t go far enough with it. Following the replacement of the filter, you should run one or two gallons of water through the system to flush out any remaining contaminants. At first, there was some confusion.

Water Filter Cartridge for GE Refrigerator
High-end generic refrigerator water filters with ultimate filtering are manufactured by PURELINE. These filters are capable of reducing chlorine as well as particles, heavy metals, and big sediments. With the PURELINE MWF replacement water filter, you can enjoy the clean, refreshing flavor of your water and ice. The MWF Replacement Filter from PURELINE has a simple and straightforward twist and lock design that makes it simple to operate. You just align the arrow with the top of the arrow, press up, and rotate 180 degrees clockwise.
- Triple Action Filtration: Pureline filters make use of advanced active coconut carbon blocks that remove contaminants from your drinking water in three stages: first, the impurities are removed, then the impurities are removed again. The water first passes through the pores of the filter, which reduces the amount of big particulates and metals present. Mechanical filtering is the term used to describe this process. The water is then further filtered via two independent steps of ionization filtering that take place when the water travels through the carbon block on its way to your refrigerator
- And Pureline removes 99 percent of the chlorine, odor, and particles from your water, resulting in clean and great-tasting drinking water for your family. All that is left once your water has passed through our filters is clean, great-tasting, and safe water for drinking
- Filtration to the extreme: Pureline carbon blocks have been independently evaluated for their ability to remove heavy metals.

GE Cafe Refrigerator RPWFE Water Filter replacement instructions are demonstrated in this video by home improvement brothers Dave and Rich, as well as Dave’s son, Caleb. It is not difficult to replace a GE Cafe water filter; however, you must first ascertain the type of water filter housing you have in order to decide how to remove the old filter and how to install the new filter. The refrigerator that we are working on in this video has a gray water filter housing, which you can see in the movie.
If you have a GE Cafe refrigerator with a blue water filter housing, you would remove the filter by turning it a quarter turn and then turn the replacement filter a quarter turn to put it back in the refrigerator. Following the removal of the filter
