Doug, Certainly a possibility, however are you referring to the weep hole at the bottom of the timing cover or the hole in the pump housing under the shaft? I’m not sure which you’re referencing. I think because the water pump was spanking new, I believed that either I didn’t perform a thorough enough job of applying sealant or that the paper gaskets that came with the pump were damaged. However, I’m sure I’ll find out when I reinstall the software. According to the leak location, it was coming from the bottom of the pump, where the weep hole is placed in the timing cover, indicating that the pump plate was not correctly sealed to the timing cover.

That’s correct, if you want to see the JHM video with his kit, he just puts a doodle on his fingertips and rubs the tips of his fingers together. After forming a thin coating, he applies it on the gasket by rubbing it in. When installing the water pump, be sure to follow the 10nm torque specifications on those and to do so in a way that distributes the pressure evenly throughout the system (like the star pattern you make when tightening wheel bolts).

This method has worked for me to complete 2 TB with no problems!

I suppose I’ll go with a thin application of sealer for the time being. I’m certain the previous gasket is original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and does not appear to have any sealant, however there was some residue on the sealing surface that looked like a little glue or something. When the pump is removed, the old gasket material must be removed because it was previously used with paper gaskets that adhered to the block and required a lot of sucking to get that sh*t out of the way. Metal gaskets are now being used instead of rubber. To the OP, please do not listen to this individual. This was done to one car in town by an Audi technician, and JHM instructed me to perform it, which I have personally done twice already. Leaving the BLACK RTV sealant to cure for at least 10 minutes, if not longer, will transform it into a SEAL of rubber, in essence.

This is why you should use a glove and apply it very thinly.

Using a metal gasket to seal something like a water pump is something I would never do. If the metal expands and contracts as a result of the heat, it is possible that leakage difficulties will develop in the future. Personally, I believe this is the reason why a paper gasket would be employed. A metal gasket suggests that there is a problem with fluid in the system. When it comes to exhausts, metal gaskets are OK because there are no precise torque specifications and when the exhaust warms up to expand, it should seal either way.

If you do have a metal gasket, I would recommend that you do not put the RTV silicon on it in order to prevent breaking of the sealant, which might allow contaminants to enter your system and cause it to malfunction.

At my shop, I change 4-5 water pumps a week, including bmws, Audis, and Mercedes-Benzes, and if the gasket is of the paper/cardboard variety, I always add a little bit of sealant on both sides of the gasket.
