This was the situation in Senegal in 2011 and 2012, when Oxfam’s program assisted farmers in recovering from a drought and a poor crop that occurred during the previous year.
1: Protect the top
Construct a wall around the top of the well, with a drainage apron made of reinforced concrete surrounding it. This will prevent surface water from draining into the well, which is particularly critical in areas where there are animal droppings nearby.
2: Reduce turbidity

Send a brave digger down to the bottom of the well with a shovel to clear away the silt and debris, and then cover the bottom of the well with a layer of gravel. When someone drops a bucket on a rope to the bottom of the well, the silt will be kept at bay, and the bucket will be less likely to sweep up silt in addition to water.
Local health promoters were in charge of keeping the chlorine solution in the dispensers up to date and replenishing it. They also provided instruction on how to operate the dispensers and advocated basic hygiene. Jean Bassette is a representative of Oxfam America. Clean the walls of the well with a chlorine solution to destroy germs that might make people sick if they are there. Disinfect the well water by momentarily injecting it with a concentrated chlorination solution (removed before the well goes back into operation).
