Once the tank is heated, it should hold the temperature for at least a day unless you are using hot water from the tank. If the heater is large enough to provide “continuous hot water”, then all you have to do is connect the two storage tank pipes together, either by disconnecting them from the tank and hooking them together, or using “3 way valves” to provide the bypass.Edited 1 times.|

|Author:packy (MA)the boiler doesn’t know what the temperature of the water in the electric heater is.the aquastat on the boiler calls the boiler on at whatever the low limit is set at. it shuts it off when the high temperature is reached.this goes on 24/7 ad infinitum or until they run out of oil.|

|Author:packy (MA)if you really have an electric water heater that is being fed from a tankless coil in the boiler, then the boiler has no way of know what the temperature of the water in the tank is.if you have a storage tank with it’s own aquastat that is wired to a control at or near the boiler, that is a horse of a different color.if you are confused as to which system you have, take a couple of pictures and post them here.|

It could have a pump controlled by an aquastat to keep the tank full of hot water, and the electrical is just a backup system.A boilerwhich is just maintaining temperature should also NOT cycle every hour, unless he has resorted to hyperbole.|

How Can I Bypass a Hot Water Heater Without Removing It?

If you’re not frightened of a little bit of plumbing work, you may forego filling your water heater with antifreeze before the cold weather settles in for the season. Rather of removing your water heater, all you need to do is install a set of bypass valves in the appropriate locations.
Before You Start
Make sure the size and kind of pipes connected to your water heater are correct before you proceed to the home improvement center. Make a list of all of the fittings and tools that you will need to perform the project successfully. Plastic fittings should not be used within 12 inches of a water heater, according to the majority of water heater manufacturers.
Bypasses are often constructed by connecting a pipe between the hot and cold water pipes that are linked to the heater.
Using this pipe, water from the cold-water feed may be diverted straight to the hot-water line, bypassing the water heater entirely. When it comes to directing the flow of water, two main types of valve sets are often utilized.
Three-way Valve Setup

To bypass the heater, close the valves on the hot and cold plumbing lines and open the valve on the bypass line.
Turn off the water heater first, then turn off the main water supply valve. In the event that you decide to drain the heater’s tank for the winter, be sure to switch on the water supply and run the plumbing for an extended period of time to ensure that all air has been removed from the tank before re-connecting the electricity or re-lighting the heater.
