Berkey Water Filter Review

Our Berkey Water Filter review is brief and to the point. A Berkey water filter is an excellent choice if you want a reliable device that will filter even the dirtiest water and leave you with clean, filtered water that tastes the same each and every time. They are available in a variety of sizes to meet the water drinking requirements of your entire family, from large to little (including a Berkey Light option). They also have a water bottle called the Sport Berkey, which is available for purchase.

  1. We’ve had them in the past as well, and they filter quite effectively.
  2. Berkey kits are pre-assembled and contain all of the components necessary to filter water immediately after purchase.
  3. After a short wash of all of the components, the assembly is really simple.
  4. It follows that the same principle applies to the spigot as well.
  5. In addition, the stainless steel chambers have withstand many falls off the counter as a result of doing some rapid spins in the RV without even a ding or scratch.
  6. More information regarding their lifetime warranty and what is covered can be found here.
  7. We have replaced out our filters on a number of occasions and have given it a thorough deep clean on occasion.
  8. Watch this short video to learn about the Berkey water filter’s components and how to set them up.
  9. That’s 6,000 cycles for a system with two filters!
  10. As a result of changing out our Big Berkey for the Travel Berkey, we were able to keep our black filter elements, which means we still had the ones from our original Big Berkey.
  11. The red food color test can also be used as a guideline.

Berkey Water Filter Problems

Despite the fact that the product is generally excellent, there are certain Berkey water filter issues to be aware of. The majority of them are related to the design of the water delivery system, rather than the filters themselves. The bottom chamber can be overfilled in several ways. At the time of purchase, we believed that if we maintained the top chamber filled, the Berkey would filter water into the bottom chamber until it was full and then stop, ensuring that we would have clean drinking water all day.

  1. The water in the top chamber will continue to filter down until it is completely depleted, at which point it will overflow into the bottom compartment.
  2. Only what can fit in the bottom should be placed at the top.
  3. It’s made of stainless steel, by the way.
  4. If your Berkey is tucked away beneath a cupboard or anywhere else, this might be a pain in the neck.
  5. Between the bottom chamber and the spigot, there is a tall sight glass that serves as a guide.
  6. The level of water in the sight glass will be the same as the level of water in the chamber when the chamber is filled with water.
  7. We chose not to purchase this because it was around $40 more expensive at the time.
  8. In addition, even though there is filtered water in the lower chamber, when I open the faucet to fill my cup with water, the water merely trickles out and almost comes to a complete stop, which is strange.
  9. We all came to the conclusion that there is a suction problem that is preventing the flow rate from increasing.
  10. In addition, it prevents air from entering via the tiny space between the top and bottom chambers of the chamber.

This may be remedied by inserting a small piece of plastic into the hole (like the ring from a gallon of milk that has been cut open). Allowing air to enter or just waiting for all of the water to filter through are both options. To place an order for a Berkey Water Filter, please click here.

Cleaning the Berkey Water Filter

Periodically, the Berkey water filters will need to be cleaned and disinfected. When it takes more than an hour to filter a couple of litres of water, we become aware of the problem. When this occurs, Berkey provides specific guidance on what to do. They claim that this is normal for the duration of the filters’ service life. They essentially instruct you to take a scouring pad and gently massage the filter elements together. You may find their detailed instructions here: How to Clean the Black Berkey Filter (with Pictures) For the filters, I devised my own cleaning program that I followed.

  1. After that, back flush the filters by firmly inserting the end of the syringe into the end of the filter and spraying clean water through the filter assembly.
  2. I normally repeat this process about 5 times and then put tap water down the filter to prime it a little.
  3. Take care not to push too firmly, since this might result in damage to the bottom of the chamber.
  4. If you’re searching for a dependable water filtration system at an affordable price, you should certainly look into the Berkey water filter system.
  5. Save this for later: This Crazy Family Adventure is being led by me, the Captain.

Choosing a Berkey System

A variety of Berkey® Systems are available in a variety of sizes and configurations, and some websites don’t go into great length discussing the differences between one system and the next. Let’s go over it step by step: The Berkey® product line is available in a variety of sizes, ranging from the Go Berkey® to the Crown Berkey®. The sole difference between these two systems is the size of their components. Using the same Black Berkey®® Purification Elements technology, they all filter water in the very same way and with the exact same results.

This does not imply that the larger systems filter the water any more thoroughly; rather, it just implies that they filter the water more fast.

Furthermore, by combining many Elements at the same time, they will endure longer than if they were employed individually. However, you may utilize two Elements in a Crown system – the largest Berkey® system available – and it will function absolutely fine in that configuration.

Berkey®️ Dimensions

The size of your group or family should be the primary consideration in your Berkey® buying choice. Simple calculations of the quantity of water each system can handle, as well as the number of people it is designed to serve, are provided below:

Berkey Water Filter – The World’s Best Personal Water Purifier Systems

  • Water purification devices like Berkey’s can readily cleanse regular tap water, as well as raw, untreated water from remote lakes and streams, without the need for energy. In addition to eliminating harmful impurities like as bacteria and viruses, chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, fluoride, and other harmful contaminants, Berkey also removes helpful and nutritious minerals that are essential for maintaining a healthy body and mind. The cost of water filtration is only approximately two cents per gallon, which is quite affordable. There are several water filters on the market that make the claim to be a water purifier, but they do not match the performance standards necessary to be classified as one. A water treatment equipment must be able to eliminate at least 99.9999 percent of harmful bacteria and lower viruses by 99.9999 percent in order to be certified as a water purification device. Purification Elements like the Black Berkey Purification Elements may be categorized as water purifiers since they eliminate 99.9999999 percent of harmful bacteria and 99.999 percent of viruses from water, which is much more than the requirement. The Black Berkey Purification Elementformulation has been evaluated and found to be superior to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 by State and EPA authorized laboratories. The Black Berkey filters (purification elements) have been shown to be capable of reducing viruses down to the nanoscale scale, with a measured range of 24-26 nanometers
  • 24-26 nanometers is.024 to.026 microns in size. We have demonstrated through extensive testing and research that Berkey water filters remove undesired pollutants to levels that are below measurable limits. The usage of phrases such as “non-detectable” to characterize the ability of a water filter to eliminate dangerous contaminants was uncommon if not non-existent prior to the publication of these test findings. Berkey water filters are used across the world. A Berkey Water Filter provides you the freedom to utilize virtually any outside natural water source and transform it into the finest tasting, most natural drinking water available.

Here is why you need water purifiers.

Water has the ability to deceive on a physical level. It may appear clean and germ-free on the surface, but it may really contain millions of germs. A variety of bacteria and viruses may be discovered in water, each with its own characteristics. Those who have not been treated in particular. Water that has not been treated is extremely harmful to consume. Those who have not gone through the process of cleansing and filtration will have major issues in their bodies. Drinking polluted water can cause a variety of ailments, including diarrhea and vomiting.

Some older homes may have outdated pipes and plumbing systems, which can lead to the introduction of copper and other toxins into the drinking water supply system.

When you purify your water, you can help keep these contaminants out of your drinking water.

Common Contaminants

  • Protozoan parasites are a kind of parasite. This type of parasite reproduces by consuming the waste products of other animals. Their major source of nutrition and survival is provided by the animals. Cryptosporidium and Giardia are two parasites that fall under this category of contamination. Water contaminated with these minute organisms, such as Escherichia coli, can cause severe stomach pain and diarrhea in susceptible individuals. The E.Coli Bacteria is a kind of bacteria that is well-known. To be more specific, E.Coli plays a significant role in the digestion of a person’s food intake. It really aids in the breakdown of the food into smaller pieces by breaking it down. It becomes harmful, however, when it is introduced into the upper digestive tract by the consumption of polluted water. Pesticides have the potential to induce food poisoning and other intestinal diseases. Heavy Metals are among the inorganic chemical substances that have been optimized for agricultural use. Once water becomes tainted as a result of this, it can cause renal issues and even cancer in certain cases. Zinc, arsenic, mercury, and lead are some of the elements that fall under this category of pollutant. In terms of how this might be hazardous to a person’s health once it has been introduced into the body, the explanation is rather straightforward. Regardless matter whether it originates from a person’s or an animal’s body, petroleum is extremely unclean. The oil spills and leaks that occur as a result of this might damage our water supplies. A common example would be crude oil, which is frequently discovered poisoning our drinking water supplies.

These are simply a handful of the most prevalent contaminants that may be identified in our water and risk its dependability. Pharmaceutical prescriptions and pharmaceuticals, sewage leaks, and industrial wastes are some of the other toxins that we must be aware of when cleaning up after ourselves. Here are a few of the reasons why you should invest in a water filtration system:

To Remove Chlorine

Those listed above are only a few of many potential threats to the dependability of our water supply. Pharmaceutical pharmaceuticals and medicines, sewage leaks, and industrial wastes are some of the other toxins of which we must be aware. A few of the reasons why you should use a water filter are as follows:

To Remove Fluoride

Only a little quantity of the fluoride mineral is required by our bodies. When consumed in large quantities, it can be harmful, especially to youngsters under the age of eight years old. Fluoride is added to the majority of toothpastes, soil fertilizers, and even water systems, which has raised concerns throughout the world. Anything in excess is not healthy to one’s health. Users are more likely to overconsume the mineral as a result of this action, which can result in major health consequences.

To Remove Pathogens

Another extremely essential reason for filtering your drinking water is to prevent the spread of disease. Parasites and bacteria should not be allowed to breed in your drinking water since they might pose a serious threat to the health of you and your loved ones. Giardia intestinalis is a tiny parasite that can live and grow in a variety of environments for an extended period of time, perhaps up to many months. When a parasite infects a person, it can develop Giardiasis, which is a type of infection that produces diarrhea that can linger for up to six weeks.

Another parasite that has the potential to produce the same symptoms as those listed above is known as Cryptosporidium, and what makes this parasite much more harmful is that it is resistant to chlorine, necessitating the use of a mechanical filter to remove it.

Many pathogens may be removed from your water once it has been passed through an ultra, micro, or nano-filtration system, respectively.

To Remove Lead from the Water

It is critical that lead is removed from drinking water since lead may be harmful if consumed in large quantities. Lead is typically found in drinking water after it has passed through ancient plumbing pipelines or solder that was used to link them together. Lead may enter your drinking water supply by seeping into it when the water flows through the pipelines. A reverse osmosis system, carbon filters, or distillation systems that have been particularly engineered to remove lead from drinking water can all be used to extract the metal.

These are just a few of the most compelling arguments in favor of installing a water filter in your house.

Berkey Filters are designated as a Purifier, which means that they conduct far more purification than a filter does.

Most other filtration systems are inadequate because they do not remove viruses or bacteria, and many remove the beneficial minerals that your body needs. Perhaps that’s why Berkey systems have long been recognized as the world’s ultimate in water purification.

  • Why you should put your faith in us Who this is intended for
  • What we discovered as a result of our testing What it means and why it matters Information contained within the Black Berkey Filter
  • Footnotes

The Wirecutter’s water filter recommendations, which include pitchers and under-the-sink systems, have been under the supervision of writer-editor Tim Heffernan since 2016. Since 2014, we have contracted with John Holecek, a former NOAA researcher, to do air and water quality testing for us. He developed the test solutions and contracted with the independent lab that Wirecutter hired to conduct the tests for this guide and our guide to pitcher filters, both of which were published this year. The lab in question, EnviroMatrix Analytical, is accredited by the California Department of Health Services and performs basic drinking water analyses on a regular basis.

Filtration systems such as the Big Berkey, as well as similar systems made by Alexapure and Propur, are popular among people who rely on well water, which may contain contaminants (the manufacturer claims that the filter removes an extensive list of contaminants) that would otherwise be removed by a municipal water plant.

2 Furthermore, Berkey dealers promote these systems as emergency preparedness products, with some calculating how many people they can feed clean water to every day using the units (claiming up to 170 for the Big Berkey).

It is impossible for a filter to eliminate contaminants that were never there in the first place, so you may not need one at all unless you are experiencing a recognized problem.

The filter is not NSF/ANSI certified, which means that it is not comparable to the filters we have tested in the past.

John Holecek prepared so-called challenge solutions and ran them through the Big Berkey system (which was fitted with the Black Berkey filters) before sending samples of the solutions and filtered water to an independent laboratory (EnviroMatrix Analytical) that was accredited by the state of California for analysis.

  1. These would offer an indicator of the overall performance of the filters in terms of heavy metals and organic molecules, respectively.
  2. As soon as he had verified using Berkey’s dye test that the filters were correctly placed and operating as intended, the technician ran a gallon of polluted solution through the Berkey and dumped the filtrate, which included the water and anything else had gone through the filter.
  3. After that, the control and filtrate samples were forwarded to Enviromatrix Analytical for further examination.
  4. In the laboratory of Enviromatrix Analytical, the chloroform (as well as any other volatile organic compounds, or VOCs) was analyzed with the use of a gas-chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS).
  5. The findings of Enviromatrix Analytical somewhat contradicted and partially validated the statements made by New Millennium.
  6. On the other side, they outperformed everyone else when it came to lead reduction.
  7. 3 Young’s findings on both chloroform and lead were supported by ours.

Because of the toxicological test conducted in 2012, toxicology has been transferred to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

Young’s test, on the other hand, is referred to as the “latest round” by New Millennium, and his findings are the most current to be posted on the Berkey Water Knowledge Base, a separate website that New Millennium maintains for displaying its test results.

And because none of them adhere to the NSF/ANSI standard, we don’t have a common reference point for comparing the outcomes of the experiments.

We also disassembled a pair of Black Berkey filters to examine their construction and seek for proof that they feature “at least” six separate filtering components, as claimed by the company’s marketing department in its advertising.

The Berkey filtration system is a type of gravity-fed water filter that falls into a broad category.

One example is the usage of filter pitchers, which is a frequently utilized and successful technique.

Their reduction of lead levels from 170 ug/L to just 0.12 ug/L in our test was considerably more than the NSF/ANSI certification criteria of decreasing lead levels from 150 ug/L to no more than 10 ug/L or less.

The NSF/ANSI standard calls for a 95 percent decrease in turbidity, from 300 ug/L to 15 ug/L or below.

New Millennium Concepts, on the other hand, says that the Black Berkey filter eliminates chloroform by 99.8 percent, bringing it “below lab detectable limits.” This claim is made right on the box in which the filters are packaged.

Berkey Water Knowledge Base (which is linked to from, but is not a part of, the company’s main website) contains the findings of its tests.

For our part, we had our laboratory conduct testing after the Black Berkeys had previously filtered many gallons of challenge solution that had been prepared to NSF/ANSI standards.

To put this finding in context, our top-ranked gravity-fed water filter, byBrita, is officially NSF/ANSI certified for lead removal, which means it satisfies the complete Standard 53 process for lead removal on test solutions at twice the rated filter capacity.

Additionally, he noted that the filters performed exceptionally well on lead in his tests, which is consistent with our own findings.

Separate EPA protocol was followed by Los Angeles County, which consisted of passing only single 2-liter samples of challenge solutions through the filters.

This filter’s inconsistent results, when compared to those from the two laboratories commissioned by Berkey, made us hesitant to endorse it, especially since there are other independently certified choices available that put all these unresolved doubts to rest completely.

This is due to the fact that NSF/ANSI certification criteria are extraordinarily demanding, as well as transparent: Anyone can read them on the National Science Foundation’s website.

The NSF person we contacted with while researching this guide informed us that it would cost well over $1,000,000 to do certification testing for all of the contaminants that New Millennium Concepts says the Black Berkey filters remove from water.

Although the Big Berkey has excellent overall filtering performance, it has enough practical shortcomings that we would recommend one of our other water filter recommendations before recommending the Big Berkey based on these considerations alone.

The Berkey, on the other hand, is huge and conspicuous, in contrast to our suggested filters.

Moreover, because it is too big to fit in most refrigerator layouts, keeping water cold in the Berkey is problematic, although this is easy to achieve with our filter pitcher selection.

There is a 5-inch standorbase available from New Millennium Concepts that will make it easier to put glasses beneath the Big Berkey’s spigot, but it will cost you roughly $30 more.

What’s inside the Black Berkey Filter

The majority of gravity-fed filters remove pollutants from water using two distinct types of materials. Inorganic chemicals such as petroleum-based fuels and solvents, numerous insecticides, and many medications can be adsorbents, or chemically bound to, activated charcoal. When used in conjunction with a water treatment system, an ion-exchange resin can effectively remove many dissolved metals from water by exchanging toxic heavy metals (such as lead, mercury, and cadmium) for lighter, essentially harmless ones (such as sodium, which is a major component of table salt).
