Simple Tips for Maintaining Your Navien Unit
Some maintenance operations should be conducted on a regular basis in order to maintain Navien units working at top performance and to extend their life expectancy. These treatments include: Listed below are a few straightforward measures you may take to ensure that you get the most out of your Navien machine.NOTE: The frequency of maintenance will vary depending on the unit’s installation, location, use, and operation.Installation, location, use, and operation are all factors to consider.Inspect and clean the water inlet filters.Stainless steel water screens are installed on the cold water input of all Navien tankless water heaters, and the NPE-Advanced versions include an extra screen on the recirculation inlet.
Water screens are installed on the DHW cold-water connection, and there is also a screen installed between the heating supply and return connections on Navien combi-boilers.The return connection of Navien NHB boilers is equipped with a screen.Remove and clean the air filter. All Navien units (water heaters, combi-boilers, and boilers) are equipped with input air screens, which are located within the cabinet immediately below the air intake collar. These screens prevent debris from being drawn into the blower, burner, and heat exchanger assembly.Condensate traps should be cleaned regularly.
This trap is positioned at the bottom of the unit, next to the condensate drain. If you want to clean the trap, first remove the metal wire clip that holds it in place under the bottom of your cabinet and then lift the cup from the bottom of the trap. When you replace the trap, make sure that the o-ring is properly secured in its position.Waterways should be flushed.Flush solutions are circulated through the heat exchangers of water heaters and the DHW side of combi-boilers using a pump, which circulates the flush solution via the heat exchangers.
The quality of the boiler water should be checked, and heat exchangers should be cleansed if they are essential. When bringing the unit back into service, make sure everything is working properly, including the gas pressure.Further information on maintenance methods for your Navien units may be found in the operating handbook, which you can download here.

Tankless Water Heater Maintenance
Tankless hot water heaters are ideal for consumers who wish to save on energy costs while still having access to hot water on demand. The fact that they are small in size means that they are soon becoming the most popular choice for water heaters in both residential and commercial settings. If you have a tankless hot water heater, it is critical that you do regular water heater maintenance on it.Maintaining your water heater on a regular basis might extend its lifespan to more than twenty years. It is recommended that you have your hot water heater serviced at least once a year to avoid any problems.Tankless Hot Water Heater Maintenance should be performed twice a year if you live in a region with hard water or if you have the water temperature set to a high setting on your tankless water heater.
The heater’s components will function more efficiently if all of the components are properly maintained.Several tasks will need to be completed as part of the routine maintenance.
Flushing the System
At the very least, the hot water heater should be cleansed once a year.Minerals accumulate within the water heater throughout the course of the year.If you have a hard water source, the scale may accumulate more quickly.Mineral buildups in your unit’s heat exchanger might cause it to malfunction.Because of the potential failure of the tank’s efficiency, you may find yourself with an increased energy cost each month.By failing to clean your tankless hot water heater on a regular basis, you might significantly reduce its life expectancy.
Unfortunately, damage caused by mineral build-up will not be covered by your warranty policy.Flushing will eliminate all of the mineral build-up that has accumulated.Creating a vinegar water mixture, as well as having two lengths of hose and a sump pump, will allow you to flush the tank effectively.Make sure you switch off the electricity to your hot water heater completely.Turn off the water supply to the pump and then connect the hoses to the pump.Using the sump pump, you will be able to force the vinegar water into the heater, which will save time.
After you have cleansed the machine with the vinegar water, you will want to flush it with plain water to remove the vinegar smell. You can find detailed instructions on how to do this in your hot water heater’s user manual, or you can purchase a descaling package that includes the necessary instructions. If this sounds like an overwhelming process, or if you are concerned that you could make a mistake, you should hire a skilled plumber to do Tankless Water Heater Maintenance. They will be able to cleanse the system and examine the water heater to verify that there is nothing wrong with it before completing the repair.
Cleaning the Air Filter
An air filter is installed in your tankless water heater, and it will need to be cleaned on a regular basis.Remove the filter from the water heater and clean it well. After that, you’ll want to scrub it down with a soft brush and a soap and water solution to clean it.Make certain that it is well cleaned in order to maintain optimal ventilation. After thoroughly rinsing it, allow it to dry fully before reinstalling it in the water heater.
Cleaning the Water Filter
It is critical that you do not overlook the water filter while doing water heater maintenance on your unit. The majority of tankless water heaters are equipped with a screen that helps to collect any silt that may enter the system. You will need to remove these particles from your water heater on a regular basis in order to keep it operating at optimal performance. If sediment builds up in your hot water heater, it can significantly impair its ability to perform properly. The hot water heater’s water supply must be shut down before you can remove the filter from the system.Remove the filter and thoroughly clean it.
It is possible to clean it with warm soapy water or by wiping it down with a towel If you are unable to locate your water filter, consult your user handbook to identify where it is located.
Cleaning the Tank
Occasionally wiping down the outside of the tank is advisable to ensure that no dust or dirt accumulates on it.Make sure to turn off the electricity and water supplies before you begin.Using a damp cloth, wipe off the tank and the surrounding area.It is possible for a buildup of dust and debris to get inside the water heater, which can create problems.Tankless Water Heater Maintenance should be performed on a regular basis to guarantee that your unit is operating as it should. When performing heater maintenance, make sure to inspect all of the other components of the heater.
Make sure that the heating elements, valves, and pipelines are in good condition and that they are operating properly.Look for any leaks, corrosion, or anything else that appears to be wrong. If you notice anything that is incorrect, please report it so that it can be corrected as quickly as possible. The longer you let a problem to fester, the worse it can develop and the more expensive it can become.Whether you are experiencing problems with your tankless hot water heater or you want to hire someone to perform all of your water heater maintenance, contact the Original Plumber right now.Tankless hot water heaters are their specialty, and they have years of expertise with them.
They can ensure that yours performs well and lasts for twenty or more years.
How Often Do Tankless Water Heaters Need Maintenance?
It is recommended that tankless water heaters are serviced by a professional at least once a year. However, if you have a water heater that leaks, you may need to have it repaired twice a year.
- The water in the region where you reside is hard.
- The temperature of your water heater is set at a high setting
The reasons for tankless water heater maintenance will be discussed in greater depth later, but for now, just know that they are important. But first, let’s take a short look at how tankless water heaters function in general.
How tankless water heaters work
Tankless water heaters do not have a storage tank to store water. It is instead the case that they heat the water as it enters your home through the cold water line.Consequently, when you turn on your hot water faucet, you are effectively activating the tankless water heater. In contrast to traditional water heaters, tankless water heaters heat water by the use of heating components, which are also known as a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is fueled by either natural gas (which is the most popular) or electricity.Having provided a quick description of how tankless water heaters operate, let us now look at why they require maintenance…
Why tankless water heaters need maintenance
Tankless water heaters have a lifespan of 20 years or more, but only if they are maintained properly.Unfortunately, as compared to traditional tank water heaters, tankless water heaters are sometimes misrepresented as ″low-maintenance″ technologies. However, this is not the case. When it comes to how much maintenance each unit requires, there isn’t much of a difference between the two units. The reason behind this is as follows: Both types of water heaters are affected by hard water.Hard water refers to water that has a high concentration of minerals, usually calcium and magnesium, in your local location.
In a tankless water heater, these minerals can accumulate within the heat exchanger, eventually clogging the passageways and preventing water from flowing through them properly. As a result, your water heater is forced to work extra in order to heat your water.Over time, this will reduce the lifespan of your water heater and cause your energy expenses to rise (water heater has to work longer, using more energy to heat the water).Furthermore, this mineral deposit on the heat exchanger has the potential to cause irreversible damage, necessitating the replacement of the heat exchanger or the replacement of the complete unit.It is not covered under the manufacturer’s guarantee if this sort of damage occurs. At the time of a routine maintenance visit, a professional will descale, also known as delime, your tankless water heater to ensure that there is no buildup of sediment around the heating components.
At the very least, you should have your water heater descaled once a year by a professional.Nonetheless, there are two unique cases in which you may require maintenance more frequently than once a year:
You may need maintenance more than once a year IF…
1: The area you live in has really hard water
There is some level of mineral content in the water that enters your water heater, no matter where you reside. However, in some parts of the nation, the water is more difficult to drink (meaning it has more minerals in it).Your tankless water heater may require descalement twice a year if you reside in a hard water location. This will help prevent damage to the heat exchanger in your heater.Map of hard water in the United States.Source: To determine whether your location has a high or low concentration of hard water, look at the hard water map shown above.
Here in Phoenix, Arizona, the water is quite hard.Continue reading our article ″Why Arizona’s Hard Water Secretly Makes Your Life Harder (And What You Can Do About It)″ to discover more about hard water.
2: Your tankless water heater is set to a high temperature
If the temperature of your water heater is set too high, you run the risk of scale building, which is especially dangerous if you reside in an area with hard water. As you may be aware, heat has the ability to cause many substances to dissolve more quickly. As a result, the higher the temperature of your water heater, the faster limescale accumulates around the heating components. So, here’s what you should do: Check the temperature setting on your tankless water heater’s thermostat to see what it is currently set at.Is the temperature on your thermostat higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit? After that, it’s time to call in a professional to do routine maintenance on your tankless water heater and remove mineral buildup from the heat exchanger.

Tankless Water Heater FAQs
When installing an NPE-2 condensing gas tankless water heater, a 12-inch gas pipe can be utilized as long as the pipe is properly suited for the application.Gas delivery is affected by a variety of parameters, including pipe size, length of gas line, and pressure drop. For safety reasons, please refer to the National Fuel Gas Code gas pipe size table to ensure that you have enough gas supply for the device. No, it is not necessary for the NPE-2 condensing tankless gas water heater to be the first device to be disconnected from the gas supply line.It may be built using existing infrastructure and can be used in place of a standard tank water heater as long as the gas line is properly designed and can provide a sufficient amount of gas to the device. With a maximum length of 75 feet and a maximum of 6 elbows, the NPE-2 is permitted for ventilation with 2″ vent material (with a reduction of 8 linear feet per 90° elbow).
The use of 3″ vent material is also an option (with a maximum length of 150′, a maximum of 8 elbows, and a reduction in linear footage of 5 linear feet each 90° elbow).PVC Schedule 40, CPVC Schedule 80, Approved Polypropylene, and stainless steel are all acceptable materials for venting applications.Yes, you may use PVC Schedule 40 with the NPE condensing tankless gas water heater, which provides for a zero-inch clearance to combustibles while installing the unit.Yes, the NPE-2 includes an integrated display and control system that makes operation simple and straightforward. With the ComfortFlow® technology from Navien, the cold-water sandwich effect* and concerns with minimum flow rates that have plagued competing tankless water heaters are no longer an issue. The ″cold-water sandwich effect″ is the unwelcome entry of cold water into the hot water supply pipe when the hot water faucet is turned on and off many times in a row.
(Department of Energy, September 2012, Measure Guideline: Transitioning to a Tankless Water Heater.) Yes, the NPE-2 may be installed outside with the help of the Navien Outdoor Vent Kit.We recommend that you only install the device outdoors in mild weather conditions. Please follow the appropriate installation methods as outlined in the installation instructions to avoid problems.Yes, the NPE-2 is capable of operating in a gas field.Natural gas will be selected as the default gas type for the unit (NG).

The use of gas water heaters may be advantageous for big households with a high demand for hot water. These devices, on the other hand, require more maintenance and are less energy efficient.
Electric Water Heater Without a Tank Electrical water heaters are less complicated to troubleshoot and consume less energy than gas water heaters. Furthermore, electricity costs have a tendency to change less than natural gas prices.

What are the benefits of flushing out a tankless water heater?
- Reduces the likelihood of clogging: Tankless water heaters can accumulate mineral backing, which can be flushed out using a descaling chemical to reduce the likelihood of clogging
- and
- Noise reduction: If your tankless water heater is creating noise, it is likely that there is a buildup of sediment within the tank. If the noise goes away on its own, it is possible that the accumulation has become so hardened that water is no longer able to travel through it efficiently.
- Acceleration of the heating process: The greater the amount of buildup in the tankless water heater, the longer it will take for the heat to move. Flushing your tankless water heater on a regular basis might help it operate at peak efficiency.
- Equipment lifespan: By flushing out the tankless water heater with a descaling solution, you are extending the life of the tankless water heater.
- Cost: If your tankless water heater is clogged, it makes it more difficult for the water to move through, increasing the amount of energy required to create hot water, resulting in higher costs! Flushing on a regular basis boosts water flow and has the potential to save expenditures dramatically.

When it comes to developing energy-efficient, ecologically friendly goods and lowering CO2 emissions, Navien has won international recognition for its work.Navien has a shorter history than the majority of other water heater firms, yet they are the most rapidly expanding.Let’s look into Navien a bit more closely.
A Brief History of Navien Tankless Water Heaters
Navien was originally known as KyungDong Navien, or KD Navien, when it was established in Seoul, South Korea, in 1978.In 1988, KD Navien became the first business in Asia to design and manufacture a condensing boiler that was both extremely efficient and ecologically benign. The firm soon extended into other countries.Navien sells HVAC equipment to more than 30 nations throughout the world, including the United States. In 2006, the firm moved to North America, where it quickly grew to become the leading maker of condensing gas water heaters in the region.North American Branch is based in Irvine, California, and serves customers across the world.
It wasn’t until lately that Navien goods began to be produced in other countries. The firm plans to expand to the east coast of the United States in the near future.Navien was one of the first boiler manufacturers to embrace the European standard for all boilers, assuring that their products are of the highest possible quality in any area where they are marketed. They have maintained their position as leaders in the design and manufacture of environmentally friendly products. The Navien HYBRIGEN SE is an example of such a vehicle.Navien’s website describes the technology as ″next generation green technology capable of fixing the global power supply dilemma while simultaneously lowering fossil fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions.″ (1) A second point of emphasis for Navien is making certain that all of their water heaters are installed and serviced by competent specialists.
This is accomplished via the use of three state-of-the-art training facilities located in Irvine, California; Moorestown, New Jersey and Woodbridge, Ontario.(2)
How Reliable Are Navien Tankless Water Heaters?
Navian water heaters have the greatest efficiency rating available on the market, as well as LEED and Energy Star® certifications, placing them among the greenest water heaters available on the market. These certifications demonstrate that Navien water heaters have longer lifespans, consume less energy, and have a smaller carbon footprint than water heaters manufactured by other companies in the industry.Tankless water heaters from Navien are available in two different models: condensing and non-condensing.Since the water heater does not have to heat a tank of stored water, one of the advantages of a tankless water heater is its capacity to swiftly heat water on demand.Steam is produced extremely fast as a result of the tremendous heat.Once the steam has cooled, it condenses back into water, completing the cycle.
The acidity of the condensed water has increased significantly, and it might cause damage to the water heater and pipelines.A condensing tankless water heater absorbs the additional heat from the water it heats from inside. Before it is discharged outdoors, the acidic water is neutralized, either by filtering or diluting it to remove the acidity.A non-condensing tankless water heater sends the steam outdoors, where it may cool without condensing inside the heater tank.A few of the unique characteristics of Navien’s tankless water heaters, both condensing and noncondensing, include:NaviTechTM — Dual stainless steel heat exchangers and burners.
Integrated ComfortFlow® Built-In Recirculation System — This system has an integrated insulated buffer tank and recirculation pump that may be used with existing supply lines, eliminating the need for additional pumps or controls.
EZNavTM Intuitive Control Panel — This control panel simplifies the process of configuring and troubleshooting the system by displaying temperature, water flow rate, and the state of the cascade.
When a dedicated return line is not available, the NaviCircTM is an optional recirculation valve for residential hot water that may be used instead.
H2AirTM- An optional package for use with a space heating and domestic hot water system in conjunction. The system includes a pump that pumps hot water to a heat exchanger that looks similar to a radiator and is positioned in a furnace or air handler. The blower in the device draws warm air over the heat exchanger and distributes it via the ductwork, eliminating the need to acquire an extra circulator for the heating system, which would otherwise be required.
A Wi-Fi remote control system, NaviLinkTM, is available as an optional feature. You can control the temperature of your water heater, view use data, and check on the health of your water heater all from your smartphone.
HotButtonTM – An optional hot water activation mechanism that may be activated by pressing a button. The boiler is responsible for heating and storing water inside the distribution system. You can turn on the recirculation pump and the burner with the touch of a button, without ever having to open the faucet.
How Long Do Navien Tankless Water Heaters Last?
As a result of its longer lifespan, tankless water heaters are becoming increasingly popular. However, Navien’s unique and copyrighted features are designed to ensure that their water heaters last for decades. It is reasonable to anticipate a Navien tankless water heater lasting 15 to 20 years, or even longer with regular maintenance. One of the primary advantages of using a tankless water heater is that it warms water just when it is needed, as opposed to a tank-style water heater, which continually heats an entire storage tank. While this in and of itself helps to extend the life of a tankless water heater, there are a number of things that we as homeowners can do to further increase its lifespan – and save money in the long run.Listed below are four methods for keeping tabs on the health of your tankless water heater:
- Whether your water is clear or hazy, rusty, or even including sediment, the quality of your water is important to consider. In order to determine if there are any difficulties with the water supply, you need first contact your local municipal water supplier and inquire. A water purification system may be required if this is the problem.
- The smell or flavor of the water – Does your water have a metallic odor or taste, or does it have another strange smell or taste? This might be due to the presence of iron in the water heater, which renders the water unfit for drinking purposes. Your plumber will be able to assist you in determining if the problem is with the water or with the tank.
- It is normal to hear some noise from your tankless water heater, but if you start to hear any, it might be a warning that sediment is accumulating in the tank. The sediment will need to be drained out in order to prevent it from building up further, and you will then need to replace the complete water heater.
- Pressure change – When there is a shortage of hot water and low pressure, it is a warning that something is really wrong with the system. Call your plumber as soon as possible
Where Are Navien Tankless Water Heaters Manufactured?
Navien tankless water heaters are made in Seoul, South Korea, by Navien Corporation. On the other hand, Navien announced in February 2020 that it will be establishing its first production facility in the United States of America.Virginia’s James City County will serve as the site for the production and assembly operations.Navien will invest $77.5 million in the project, which will result in the creation of around 180 new jobs in the city.(3)Initially, the facility will be operated solely as a distribution hub, with production operations beginning in 2023 after that.By 2026, Navien plans to more than double the size of its present 300,000-square-foot plant to over 900,000 square feet.

Cost of Top Navien Tankless Water Heater Models?
Navien tankless water heaters are available for purchase for between $800 and $2,000 for the device alone.Given that you can only acquire Navien goods from an authorized dealer at this time, you will need to budget for the cost of hiring a plumber, as well as any service fees and installation costs. The type of water heater you choose is the most important aspect in deciding pricing.Navien is well known for their tankless water heaters, which are available in two varieties: condensing and non-condensing models. However, the firm has grown to incorporate a combi-boiler series as part of its product line. These heaters will not only heat your water, but they will also heat your entire home.
Obviously, the price tag for this sort of heating system will be far more than that of a typical tankless water heating system. It will be less expensive to purchase a non-condensing tankless water heater initially, but it will be more expensive to install.Because of the complexity and cost of the venting system, which must be made of non-corrosive materials, this type of tank is not recommended. It is possible that interior components will be less expensive since they do not have to endure the corrosive nature of the effluent.Installing a condensing tankless water heater will be less expensive than purchasing one, but the latter will be more expensive than the former.Because it neutralizes the heat and gases, the condensing unit will not necessitate the installation of an expensive ventilation system.
The interior components, on the other hand, will be more expensive since they would have to survive the corrosive effluent.Additional factors that might influence the cost of installation include whether or not a new gas line is required, as well as whether or not a recirculating water line is required.Optional add-on features will also increase the cost of the initial purchase.Estimates for these properties are provided in the table below.A Navien tankless water heater will initially cost more than other tankless water heaters, but you will save money in the long term since it is more energy efficient.
How is the Warranty on Navien Tankless Water Heaters?
