Refrigerator – Replacing the Water Filter
It is recommended that you change the water filter in your refrigerator every six (6) months or after every 200 gallons of water that is discharged from it. If the flow of water to the icemaker or dispenser begins to slow, it is necessary to replace the filter on a more frequent basis. Important: When replacing the water filter, there is no need to switch off the water supply to the refrigerator. To remove and replace the MWF or XWF Filter Cartridge, follow these steps:
- Placing a piece of cloth beneath the old filter before removing it will capture any little drops of water that may fall when the filter is removed. Take hold of the filter and spin it to the left until it comes to a complete halt. While you are spinning the filter, carefully take it away from the filter head with your other hand. Maintain the filter’s level in order to reduce water leakage. If the filter does not come loose readily, it is possible that air has become trapped inside. Press down on the water dispenser and the filter should come straight out
- This will relieve any pressure. Remove the plastic cap from the new filter and toss it in the trash. Fill the top of the new filter with tap water to ensure that it is completely filled. Place the filter inside the cartridge holder by matching the arrow on the filter with the corresponding arrow on the cartridge holder (see illustration). If the cartridge holder does not have an arrow, simply ensure that the filter is pointing forward when the cartridge is placed. Push the filter slightly upward to contact the top of the cartridge in the filter head
- This will ensure that the filter is properly seated. Gradually move the filter to the right, until the filter cartridge comes to a complete stop. It will naturally rise into position as you spin the cartridge
- When the filter has been replaced, it is necessary to clear the system of any trapped air that has accumulated. To use the dispenser, choose Water from the dispenser option and push the pad until the water starts flowing. Due to the presence of air in the new filter, the first few ounces of water may splutter. This is quite normal. Water should be dispensed continuously for roughly 1-2 gallons in order to ensure that all air is removed from the system.
Installation Instructions:In order to make replacement instructions as accessible as possible, replacement instructions are frequently printed on the filter, on the package, or on an insert inside the filter packing. The instructions are also available on the internet. Beginning in mid-2016, the water filter label will provide instructions on how to change the filter. For more information about the filter and how to change it, see the following website:

- Note: If an arrow does not appear on the graphics of the replacement filter, simply insert the filter vertically and rotate it from left to right to complete the installation. When you rotate it, you should be able to feel it lock in place.
To remove and replace the RPWFE Filter Cartridge, follow these steps: Instructions are printed on an insert that is supplied with the filter package. The position of the filter changes depending on the model type. It will be positioned either on the upper left-hand corner of the fresh food interior or within the left refrigerator door on the left side of the refrigerator interior. If you have a BLUE Filter Holder, the following steps must be followed:REMOVING THE FILTER CARTRIDGE:
- Remove the old cartridge by opening the filter door and tugging on the bottom of the cartridge to dislodge it from the filter clips on the inside of the filter housing. Swing the cartridge outward until you hear the ‘click’ of the cartridge holder interacting with the bracket
- Then return the cartridge to its original position. Turn the cartridge one-quarter turn counter-clockwise to activate it. Remove the cartridge by pulling it away from the cartridge holder once it has been twisted out of the way. It is possible that a tiny amount of water will leak out
DELIVERY AND INSTALLATION OF THE FILTER CARTRIDGE:
- Make sure that the filter cartridge and the cartridge holder are aligned such that the word “FRONT” is visible at the top of the unit. Push the cartridge all the way to the back of the device until it is completely enclosed. The filter cartridge should be twisted one-quarter turn clockwise until the word ‘FRONT’ is facing outward
- While making sure the cartridge is firmly placed in the holder, gently swing the filter inward until it is in the desired position. If the filter will not swing freely, check to be that it is correctly aligned and fully inserted within the cartridge holder before proceeding. It is not necessary to have the RED indicators showing.
The filter cartridge should be aligned with the cartridge holder such that the word “FRONT” is facing up at the top of device. In order to completely seat the cartridge, it must be pushed toward the back of the device. The filter cartridge should be rotated one-quarter turn clockwise until the word ‘FRONT’ is facing outward; while making sure the cartridge is firmly installed in the holder, gently swing the filter inward until it is in the desired position. If the filter does not swing freely, check to be that it is correctly aligned and fully inserted within the cartridge holder before proceeding.
- Make sure that the filter cartridge and the cartridge holder are aligned such that the word ‘FRONT’ is facing the top of the unit. Push the cartridge all the way to the back of the device until it is completely placed there. Twist the filter cartridge clockwise one-quarter turn until the word ‘FRONT’ is facing outward
- While continuing to ensure that the cartridge is properly inserted in the holder, gently swing the filter inward until it is in position. Ensure that the filter is correctly aligned and thoroughly placed within the cartridge holder if it is difficult to swing the filter. It is not necessary to have the RED signs showing
DELIVERY AND INSTALLATION OF THE FILTER CARTRIDGE:
- With the word ‘FRONT’ facing outward, center the cartridge in the cartridge holder so that it is in the center of the cartridge. Continue to push the cartridge inward until it is completely inserted. In order for the cartridge holder to be properly installed, the letter ‘FRONT’ must be centered on it. It is not necessary to see the RED lights
- Nevertheless, it is necessary to confirm that the cartridge is fully placed in the holder before gently swinging the filter into position. To determine if the filter will not swing freely, check to be that it is correctly aligned with and fully inserted within the cartridge holder.

When Should the Filter Be Replaced:
- The replacement indication light on your dispenser or temperature control panel will be present on the majority of models. Water filter replacement will be indicated by the illumination of this light
- The color of this light will vary depending on the model. You may get information about the replacement indicator light in your individual model by consulting the owner’s handbook
- For filters that do not have a replaceable indication light, we recommend that you change them every six months or if there is a reduction in the flow of water to the water dispenser or the icemaker, whichever comes first.
Water Filter Cartridge Removal: If you are changing the water filter cartridge, start by slowly twisting the old one to the left until it is completely removed. Do not pull the cartridge all the way down. It’s possible that a tiny amount of water will trickle down. Important: When replacing the water filter, there is no need to switch off the water supply to the refrigerator. Installing the Water Filter Cartridge is a simple process.

SmartWater filters cannot be used in a refrigerator built before 2001 (save for Water by Culligan filter types), and the refrigerator must be equipped with an adaptor to allow them to be used.
- If you are changing a MWF or GWF SmartWater filter cartridge that is attached to an adapter, you must first remove the adapter before inserting the new cartridge
- Otherwise, the cartridge will not work. If you are replacing an FXRC Water by Culligan filter cartridge, you should keep the adaptor in place while doing so. This adaptor will be kept in the refrigerator until you need to change the cartridges in the future.
- Any time you want, you may go to our GE Appliances PartsAccessories website and shop for GE Appliances Water Filters.
- The filter may be removed by turning it to the left approximately a 14 turn. When using versions without a replacement indication light, paste a month/year sticker on the filter or label the cartridge with the month/year it was placed to serve as a reminder when it is time to change it. Fill the new cartridge halfway with tap water to improve the flow of water from the dispenser once it has been replaced. Turn the filter slowly to the right until it comes to a complete halt. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE FILTER TOO MUCH. With each rotation of the cartridge, it will mechanically lift itself into position. The cartridge will travel approximately one-half revolution. Water should be dispensed from the dispenser for 3 minutes (about 12 gallons) to clean the system and prevent sputtering. Reset the filter indication light if necessary (on models with this feature). Press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER pad on the dispenser for 3 seconds, or until the light goes out or turns green, depending on your preference. If you do not keep your finger on the RESET pad for a long enough period of time, the light will remain on or remain red. If you keep your finger on the RESET pad for an extended period of time, the light will turn off and then back on. Please refer to your refrigerator’s owner’s handbook to find out how to reset it specifically. When a new water filter cartridge is fitted, it is possible for water to shoot out of the dispenser.
Using a 14-turn motion to the left, you may remove the filter. Install a month/year sticker on the filter or label the cartridge with the month/year it was placed to serve as a reminder to replace the filter for models without a replacement indicator light. Make sure to fill the new cartridge with tap water before replacing it to ensure that the dispenser continues to function properly after replacement. Gradually rotate the filter to the right until it comes to an abrupt halt DO NOT TIGHTEN THE FILTER OVERLY MUCH.
- About a 12-turn movement is anticipated for the cartridge; Water should be dispensed from the dispenser for 3 minutes (about 12 gallons) to flush the system and prevent sputtering.
- Press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER pad on the dispenser for 3 seconds, or until the light goes out or turns green, depending on the dispenser.
- If you keep your finger on the RESET pad for an extended period of time, the light will turn off and then back on again.
- In some cases, the installation of a water filter cartridge might result in the dispenser spouting water.
- When a water filter cartridge is not installed in the refrigerator, you must use the water filter bypass plug that was included with the refrigerator. It is not possible to use the water dispenser or the icemaker until the filter or filter bypass plug is installed. If you require a bypass plug but did not receive one with the refrigerator or have misplaced it, a replacement may be obtained at no cost by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, dial 1-800-561-3344

Water Filter Replacements:
- Slowly rotate the cartridge to the left until it is no longer visible. It is possible that a tiny amount of water will trickle down. Care should be used when removing the filter cartridge since it may be expelled if air has been trapped in the system. When removing, proceed with care. Remind yourself to replace the filter cartridge every six months by noting it down in your calendar
- Removing the protective foil from the cartridge’s end is necessary. Ensure that the cartridge is properly positioned into the cartridge holder and that it is progressively rotated to the right until it stops. When the cartridge is correctly fitted, you will hear a “click” when the cartridge is locked into place. This is normal. Positioning the blade at the end of the cartridge should be done vertically. Keep the filter from becoming too tight. Retain the cartridge cover in place
- Allow 3 minutes (about 1 12 gallons) of water to flow from the dispenser (on models with this feature) to clean the system and prevent sputtering. Those versions that do not have a dispenser should just discard the first few batches of ice that are generated immediately after changing the filter cartridge.
It should be noted that a newly fitted water filter cartridge may cause water to gush from the dispenser when turned on. The bypass plug for the water filter must be used if there is no water filter cartridge installed in the water filter system. The dispenser (on models that are equipped with one) and the icemaker will not function if the filter or filter bypass plug is not installed. Alternative Replacement Filters: Additional filter cartridges (part numbers GSWF and GWF/MWFP) are available for purchase directly from GE Appliances.
How to Replace a Water Filter on a GE Profile Refrigerator
It is critical to update your refrigerator’s water filter on a regular basis. Spiderplay/iStock/Getty Images is the source of this image. With the Profile refrigerators, which are available in a variety of sizes and configurations, GE also offers a variety of filters to go along with them. The filters, which are designated by acronyms such as MSWF, XWF, and GSWF, are all cylindrical in shape, and one of them — the RPWFE — is equipped with a radio transmitter that detects leaks in the water distribution system.
If your refrigerator has a control panel, it will have an LED or a screen that will alert you when the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced.
You may also sign up with GE to receive a text message when it is time to change your filter. For refrigerators without an automated warning system, GE Appliances suggests replacing the filter every six months or if the water flow appears to be considerably decreased.
GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator Water Filter Location
If your GE Profile side-by-side refrigerator is equipped with a water filter, it is either located within the refrigerator compartment at or near the top of the unit’s interior or inside its left-hand door. When you glance inside the refrigerator, you might notice it hanging down from its perch, but some are hidden behind a little door fitted into the side of the compartment or the edge of the door, which you might not notice. The filter should be easy to find, but if you have any problem locating it, refer to the UseCare handbook for your particular model, which may be found on GE’s website.
General Procedure for Replacing the Water Filter
With the exception of the RPWFE filter, installation is essentially the same for all GE water filters, despite the fact that the sizes of the various filters differ. However, if the filter is located within a refrigerator compartment, you should lay a towel under it before removing the old one in order to capture any leftover water that leaks out during the process. You may simply hold the filter and swivel it to the left to detach it from the mounting if it isn’t concealed by a door or other obstruction.
- It’s a good idea to fill the replacement with tap water before installing it in order to flush out any trapped air and ensure immediate water flow.
- As it clamps into place, it will elevate a little bit.
- It’s necessary to pull the bottom of the filter toward you until it releases completely after opening the door.
- Once the new filter has been installed, put the bottom of the enclosure into the enclosure and close the door.
Avoiding GE Refrigerator Water Filter Problems
If your refrigerator has a control panel, the water filter button will have an LED that will illuminate when the filter needs to be replaced. After changing the filter, press and hold this button for three seconds to force the filter sensor to be reset again. On a touch-screen refrigerator, pick Filter from the main menu and then hit Reset to restart the appliance. If your GE refrigerator water dispenser still does not function after changing the filter, it is most likely due to the filter not being correctly placed in the dispenser.
It’s likely that you didn’t go far enough with it.
Water may appear to be slightly discolored or to contain minute black particles at first, but this is not a cause for concern.

GE Cafe Refrigerator RPWFE Water Filter replacement instructions are demonstrated in this video by home improvement brothers Dave and Rich, as well as Dave’s son, Caleb. It is not difficult to replace a GE Cafe water filter; however, you must first ascertain the type of water filter housing you have in order to decide how to remove the old filter and how to install the new filter. The refrigerator that we are working on in this video has a gray water filter housing, which you can see in the movie.
- If you have a GE Cafe refrigerator with a blue water filter housing, you would remove the filter by turning it a quarter turn and then turn the replacement filter a quarter turn to put it back in the refrigerator.
- It is possible that a general filter will not function properly.
- It is held in place by a series of microscopic grooves that must be lined up correctly.
- In order to ensure that all of the air has been removed from the pipes, operate the water dispenser for about 5 minutes while pouring out 2 gallons of water.
- It is simple and affordable to do.
- The most common causes of a stuck sliding glass door are a broken track or a track that has been blocked with dirt, as well as worn or damaged rollers.
- Simply watch the video below to learn how simple it is to remove the door and rollers from their tracks.
The sliding door may then be raised and pushed out to reveal the rollers at the bottom of the door, if necessary.
It is possible to pry the rollers out and check them.

How To Replace The Water Filter On Your Refrigerator – Old And New Methods
Every six months, the water filter in your refrigerator should be removed and replaced with another one. Your refrigerator’s water filter is used on a daily basis and should be replaced with the precise filter recommended by the refrigerator maker. Exceptional water filtration systems are built into the latest refrigerator models, enabling them to produce ice through the ice dispenser and clean drinking water through the door of the refrigerator. When it comes to refrigerator water filters, manufacturers recommend that you replace them at least once every six months, and maybe once every four months if you reside in a region with hard water, such as Arizona or a similar location.
As a result, it is necessary to replace the filter on a regular basis.
