Make Sure You Have a Drum Pump that will Get the Water Out!

Pump Options for your 55 Gallon Drum
The AquaDrum is equipped with a rather effective hand pump, which is included. However, allow me to demonstrate various different methods of removing your emergency water storage from your drum using other pumps that you may already have on hand.
A Basic Bicycle Pump
The first thing you’ll need is a simple bicycle pump. Many of you bikers are likely to have a simple bicycle pump on hand. Simply detach the hand pump line and connect the bike pump to the air entrance on the cap using a twist motion. Clap your hands together to lock and push air into your 55-gallon barrel. Soon, you’ll be able to turn on the faucet and have clean water flowing.
Use Foot Pump with the AquaDrum Water Filtration System
Second, a large, old-fashioned foot pump will also work wonders.If you happen to have one of these lying around for inflating rafts or other inflatable items, this will work just well.Simply connect the foot pump to your kit’s tubing using a piece of the tubing that was included.To connect the tubing to the foot pump, attach one end to the air spout and the other end to the air portal on the AquaDrum Cap by twisting them together.
It’s time to inflate your drum by stepping on the foot pump for the first time.Although you won’t get much of a workout with this pump, you will extract a tremendous amount of water from your drum!
Electric Air Pump – Uber Inflator
Another option is to use a large, old foot pump to get the job done.This will work if you happen to have one of these lying around for inflating rafts or other inflatable devices.Simply connect the foot pump to your kit’s tubing using a portion of the tubing that was provided.To connect the tubing to the foot pump, attach one end to the air spout and the other end to the air portal on the AquaDrum Cap by twisting it together.
In order to inflate your drum, it is necessary to step on the foot pump.This pump works rapidly, so you won’t get much of a workout, but you will receive a fantastic flow of water from your drum!
Use Any Type of Pump with this 55 Gallon Drum Pump
So, basically, any sort of pump that fits over the air portal will function with the AquaDrum to pump clean water out of your 55 gallon drum when used in conjunction with the AquaDrum.There is no pump.It’s not an issue!Simply turn on the spigot and drink directly from the barrel.
It’s similar to a long straw!It is particularly effective when you are really thirsty.Attach the pump to the end of the spigot and spray out water when you need to wash anything or someone with your AquaDrum.This is yet another useful use for your AquaDrum!Simply screw off the spigot and connect the other end of the hand pump to the hose to complete the process.
The arrow should be pointing in the direction of the water flow to be effective.Whatever sort of pump you have, make sure to put it through its paces.In a previous video, we discussed the failure of a popular 55-gallon drum pump, which was widely used.

- Placing the siphon hose into the barrel is important.
- Make a fist and blow into the hose while wrapping your hand around the hole’s mouth.

- I just take a 6+ foot section of garden hose, immerse the entire thing, plug one end with my thumb, then bring that side out and put it on the ground, releasing my thumb, and repeat the procedure.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A DRUM PUMP THAT WILL GET THE WATER OUT!

ELECTRIC AIR PUMP – UBER INFLATOR
This electric bike pump is quite remarkable.When there was just 3″ of water in the barrel bottom, we were able to employ this device.It caused the barrel to be expanded, and pure drinking water virtually sprayed out of the spout.Use the electric bike pump instead of your hand pump by removing your hand pump and placing the air spout of the bike pump over the air portal of the drum cap (see illustration).
As though you were filling a tire, tighten the nut down around the nut.When you turn it on, it will swiftly pressurize your cistern.When you gently shake the drum, you will be able to see if it is full of air.If it rocks, it means that it is full of air and ready to go.The electric pump is efficient and produces a steady stream of water.
USE ANY TYPE OF PUMP WITH THIS 55 GALLON DRUM FILTER

Ways to Increase Water Pressure in Rain Barrels
A rain barrel allows you to collect rainwater and use it to irrigate your garden or wash windows or automobiles in your immediate vicinity.According to Stephen and Rebekah Hren’s book ″The Carbon-Free Home,″ a 55-gallon food-grade rain barrel requires a perforated screen top to allow water to enter while keeping insects out.Even while a hose bib makes it possible to connect an irrigation hose, in order to get a good flow from the hose, you must investigate techniques to enhance the water pressure in the barrel.(See References for further information.)
Considerations
According to the authors of ″The Carbon-Free Home,″ elevating the rain barrel a few feet above the ground results in increased pressure and easier watering of the plants.Raising the barrel as high as 4 feet above the ground may appear absurd, but it allows you to exert more pressure on the water, which is particularly useful if your garden is located a long distance away from the rain barrel.Gravity is utilized in this system to assist in the process of increasing the pressure of the water.(See References for further information.)
Stand Options
Construct a stand out of cinder block pairs piled on top of one another.The Hrens recommend that the cinder blocks be put on level ground, side by side, with the apertures pointing up, in order to take advantage of the blocks’ strongest location.Point the next layer in a direction that is 90 degrees from the previous one, and continue stacking until you reach the desired height.Alternatively, you may build a wood stand out of 4-by-4 posts and timber that is firmly built to withstand the 400 pounds or more that a full rain barrel weighs when fully loaded.

Bicycle Pump Rig
Samuel Melamed, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Toronto, was unsatisfied with the pressure of a ground-level rain barrel and experimented with ways to enhance it, such as adding a bladder system.He eventually settled on the bladder system.It was eventually discovered by DPN Design Product News that a bicycle floor pump could be used to pressurize an airtight rain barrel, as reported by the publication.Pressurizing an air canister with the bicycle pump is accomplished by the use of an air hose, which is then linked to the rain barrel through a quick-connect valve.
The water pressure of a hose and sprayer has been much enhanced, and it can be used to water hanging plants and wash patio doors, as Melamed demonstrates in an instructional film on his invention.Melamed named his invention the Saguaro Rain Collector in honor of the cactus that collects rainwater.(See References for further information.)
Electric Pump Setup
Adding an electric pump to the system is required if you wish to transfer considerable amounts of rainfall to a level higher than the barrel.At the time of publishing, an internal pump with an output of 1/8 horsepower and a pressure of 10 pounds per square inch cost less than $100 and can empty a 55-gallon rain barrel in five minutes.Alternatively, you could purchase a solar-powered submersible pump and intake pipe for for $150, which would provide 13 psi and be driven by a solar panel.It is reported by This Old House that, should you want a larger arrangement, a 1 HP electric jet pump, stored in a small shed nearby, can give 8 gallons of water per minute up to 500 feet away, according to the author (see References 3).
How to Ensure Your Rain Barrel Provides Enough Water to Your Garden – Easy Growing Ep. #23
In this episode, I talk about rain barrels and how to make sure that they supply adequate water pressure to your garden irrigation system to keep it running smoothly.Hello everyone, my name is Bryan Traficante and I’m the host of GardenInMinutes.com’s Easy Growing Episode 23.The topic of rain barrels and how to utilize them for your garden watering system is going to be the focus of today’s episode, which is a very popular one right now.Rain barrels are often discussed in three areas when we talk to people about them: storage, installation, and maintenance.
1) The cleanliness of the water Water volume is determined by the barrel’s diameter.3) The Most Important Factor: Water Flow Rate
Rain Barrel Water Cleanliness
The first of them, water cleanliness, is a rather straightforward concept.If you’re collecting water from your roof or gutters, several types of debris, such as leaves and sticks, and other similar items, may attempt to find their way into your water collection container.It is possible that if you put a filter on top of your barrel, such as a mesh screen, that most of the trash will be prevented from entering your barrel and that the barrel will be prevented from releasing water into your garden.
Rain Barrel Water Volume
The next consideration is volume; you’ll want a barrel that holds at least 50 gallons.The reason for this is that, for a bigger garden area, 50 gallons of water might be consumed very rapidly.Additionally, if you’re collecting water from your roof or gutters, the area of your roof may funnel more than 50 gallons of water in a very short period of time.It is thus typically recommended that you ensure that you have a large enough reservoir to collect it.
Rain Barrel Water Pressure
Finally, there is the issue of water pressure.Generally speaking, when it comes to rain barrels, we propose that you install a 1/3 HP sump pump on the inside of the barrel in order to supply the water to your complete garden irrigation system at the same time.It is recommended that a standard garden irrigation system have at least 10 PSI in order to operate at maximum capacity.For those who do not want to utilize a sump pump, another alternative is to work with a height difference and gravity between the top of your garden watering system and the top of the water in your rain barrel.
So, according to the calculations, every 2.31 feet of elevation gain results in an increase of around 1 PSI (pounds per square inch).As an example, suppose you want a bare minimum of 10 PSI, which implies that the top of your water level, in relation to your garden irrigation system, must be 23.1 feet higher in order to achieve 10 PSI.To place your rain barrel at that elevation is not something that is readily accomplished.However, there are a variety of options available to you.Of course, if you have a taller house or the potential to construct a taller building to contain your rain barrel, this will naturally increase the height of your house or structure.
Use a taller rain barrel so that the top of the water level will be higher, which makes it a bit simpler to remove the water from the barrel.You may also experiment with the landscaping of your yard to see if you can create a little more of the necessary height difference.You would plant your garden in a lower part of your yard, and you would place your rain barrel at a higher part of your yard, where you might perhaps build a structure to raise it even higher.
That is a difficult task for the majority of people to accomplish, but as I previously stated, a 1/3HP sump pump installed inside your rain barrel at any height is perfectly acceptable and adequate to give water flow to the whole garden.
Rain Barrel Water Flow Recap
So here’s a brief synopsis of what happened…The three most important things to keep an eye out for are…1.Make certain that the water entering your barrels is free of contaminants.
Install some sort of filter screen over the top of your rain barrel to prevent leaves and other debris out of the barrel.Check that your water barrel is large enough to deliver adequate water to the entire planting area.Generally speaking, we use tanks that are 50 gallons or more.3.In addition, make sure you have sufficient water pressure in the barrel itself, at a minimum of 10 PSI.
Homeowners usually have between 40 and 50 pounds of pressure in their homes, so you can see the relationship and difference between the two.As a result, install a 1/3 HP sump pump inside your rain barrel, or increase the height of your garden irrigation system by at least 23.1 feet from the top of the water to achieve the required minimum of 10 PSI.Alright!

Drum emptying – the easier way
The difficulty of emptying powder or bulk materials housed in drums varies based on the flow characteristics of the product being transferred, the weight of the drum, and the necessity to prevent any powder from escaping into the environment while the drum is being empty.These concerns have been addressed by Volkmann through the development of systems that empty the drum almost fully and without the need for a lot of operator interaction.The barrel is installed into a holding station and then tilted by hand to empty drums, as shown in the video.When the operator puts a suction lance into the drum, a vacuum conveying system is used to move the product out of the barrel.
As the product is pulled out of the drum, the lance dips down into the drum as a result of gravity, eventually emptying the contents of the container.A vibrator linked to the station below the platform, which aids in the extraction of difficult-to-flow items, may be used to support the process while emptying drums with liners.This method can be readily customized to the product and the work scenario at hand.It is possible to attach a lid to the barrel that is fitted with a ventilation filter and a sealing sleeve to prevent dust from escaping.This is particularly useful for items that tend to be highly dusty or that should be kept as contained as possible.

Joined on November 7, 2014 with 813 posts This is a barrel that is rather simple to assemble.Once it has been filled, there is a stand pipe attached to the rear (approximately 4″ tall) that you may blow into to begin the siphon working.Open the bottom ball valve and blast air into the stand pipe to complete the process.The ball valve should be turned off as soon as the water starts to flow.You may switch on the ball valve whenever you need water in the future.All of the joints, with the exception of the outflow pipe at the bung cap, are cemented together.
- If the system has to be taken apart for whatever reason, it may be pulled apart with the use of plumbers tape to ensure that it is properly sealed.
- In the bottom of the barrel, there is a pipe that is bonded to the bottom of the outflow fitting and extends to the bottom of the barrel.
- This is mostly for the purpose of filling a bucket.

I’m not sure which one it was.Because they were so inexpensive, I purchased a few of them.Drinking water barrel pumps are available for purchase on eBay and Amazon at reasonable costs.I’m always coming across better models than the ones I now own.Joined on October 26, 2010, with 13,602 posts.
The barrels may be connected together if you have the means to raise them and mount them horizontally.If you don’t have the means to elevate the barrels and mount them horizontally, you can fill them all at once if you have the means to do so.The 2″ bung is located on the upper side, while the 3.4″ bung is located on the lower side.

- After that, you turn the barrel on its side (it’s extremely heavy), chock it to keep it from rolling, and turn on the faucet to fill it.

That is agreed upon, and there are no arguments against it.Because of the need for water rotation, I should have mentioned that when I siphon it out for use, the water is used in the garden or hydroponics.That is what we use it for after it has been in storage for 3-6 months.A Sawyer filter is used if the water is going to be used for drinkable purposes at any point.We also brew beer, and the hoses used in that process are carefully selected and maintained.

However, as previously said, the Chinese are notorious for using lead paint and other harmful materials in their products.It’s preferable to soak and clean such equipment in inexpensive vodka before relubricating it with mineral oil purchased from a pharmacy or supermarket.Everything about this process is of food-grade quality.A strong oxidizer, bleach has the potential to accelerate rusting.It’s also not a particularly effective degreaser.

How to Empty 55 Gallon Barrels with Little Effort
A few people have asked how to remove the water or other liquids out of a fifty-five gallon barrel, and the answers are as follows: It is, in fact, rather straightforward.You may always use an old-fashioned siphon hose to get the job done.Personally, I don’t care for sucking on them, therefore I use a Super Siphon hose to remove the moisture.They are made up of a metal fitting attached to one end of a six-foot hose.
Simply insert the metal end of the tube into the liquid and shake it in an up and down motion a few times, and the siphoning activity will begin to occur.You may extend the length of the hose by connecting it to a garden hose using an adapter, which is also available.There are other siphon pumps available that are simple to operate.To get the water flowing, there is a long tube that slips into the barrel and a little pump on top to get the water started.Five gallon and fifty-five gallon containers are also suitable for use with this product.
A bung wrench is a third thing that you’ll need if you’re working with fifty-five gallon barrels.There are options in both plastic and metal for you to choose from.The one I use is made of plastic, and it can also be used to pull the lids off of 5-gallon buckets.
A short search on the internet for Super Siphon hose, Siphon Pump, and bung wrenches should turn up a number of different suppliers for these components.If you’re wanting to purchase materials, there are a number of excellent alternatives available on Amazon.Pumps that are both manual and electric are available, but for genuine emergencies, a manual pump would be preferable since it would allow you to preserve batteries when they are required.Howard
Pumping water out of 55gallon drum
This is something I did myself.With some PVC, vinyl tubing, and an RV water pump, you can make a water system.I made a dip tube out of 2″ PVC that was capped with a ball valve that was 90 degrees L and ended with a garden hose male threads.PVC cement was used to hold the pieces together.
Make careful to make a few small notches in the bottom of the dip tube before putting it together.It should not lie flush against the bottom of the barrel, otherwise the water will not flow properly.I then constructed a vent tube, complete with a valve, but with two Ls inserted so that the end points back down towards the barrel (in order to prevent dust from settling on the vent hole).I sealed the end of the pipe and drilled a few tiny holes to allow air to flow through.It is critical that air be allowed to enter when the water drains.
For these tubes, I punched holes in the barrel caps of both of the tubes.I took advantage of the fact that one of the caps was threaded for a hose and used it to fasten the vent side.The dip side of the barrel only just manages to push its way through to the bottom of the barrel.
Shurflo 2088 RV water pump ($60) was the item I purchased.It was 1/2 inch vinyl reinforced hose that I purchased, which was cut to 10 feet in length (1/2 inch being the size of the pump’s intake and output).The pump was delivered with fittings that were designed to fit into the hoses and connect them to the pump.Hose clamps were provided by me.For the ends, I used a female garden hose fitting made of brass on one side and a male garden hose fitting made of brass on the other side.The female fitting is used to connect the barrel’s dip tube to the female fitting.
- The male fitting on the opposite end of the hose allows it to be connected to any garden hose.
- It is critical to use a reinforced vinyl hose since a standard garden hose is likely to collapse with the power of the suction exerted.
- When powered by 12v (battery, etc.), the pump draws water from the barrel and pushes it out through a garden hose that is linked to the pump.
Naturally, you have complete freedom when it comes to connecting the output side.Water is delivered to our kitchen area using this system, and the drain runoff is sent directly into the evap system.RV pumps will maintain and maintain a predetermined pressure.As a result, when you close the faucet, it pumps for a couple of seconds before shutting off and remaining off until the faucet is closed again.These pumps are designed to do precisely that: supply water on demand while attempting to maintain a certain pressure.
- There are two important things to keep in mind.
- When you look at this, it looks a lot like your kitchen sink, and it’s easy for people to forget that they need to save water and just let it run.
- During the first couple of days, we had to keep a close eye on everything.
The second point to mention is that this pump will empty a 55-gallon barrel in around 15-20 minutes.If you forget to turn it off and it bursts a leak, or if someone forgets to turn off the faucet while you’re away, you’ll be out of water in no time at all.The whole cost was around $100, but I wanted to build it well so I purchased high-quality fittings and hose everywhere I could.
If you dig around, you could probably get away with far less.Get yourself a Coleman propane instant hot water heater (or dig up an old RV HW Heater) and you’ll have hot and cold running water for the whole camp in no time.-Chris
